TANAH MERAH, June 30 (Bernama) -- Umno Supreme Council member Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik has proposed that a debate be held among candidates for the top three posts in the party.
This will enable members to gauge the most suitable candidates for the posts based on their intellectual sharpness.
"Give each candidate a topic to handle and let party members gauge their leadership qualities.
"We want leaders who are committed and show wisdom in analysing issues at hand and able to make decisions," he told reporters after opening the 13th annual general meeting of Tanah Merah and Jeli Risda Cooperative Berhad here Monday.
Abdul Rahim, who is the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA) chairman, said the debate should be held only if there were contests for the top three posts in Umno, otherwise it would not be necessary.
On calls for the abolishment of the nomination quota for contesting the top posts in Umno, he said there was not enough time for that as an extraordinary general meeting had to be held first.
He hoped the proposal for a code of ethics for contestants would be introduced soon as some members felt that the party regulations were very rigid, especially on money politics.
tunku : it is a very good idea and it's about time that we practice this method for all the posts, not only top three but this is not the only method for us to choose the best candidate as some are good at talking but action zero.Another problem will be bribe.this is the main concern.
