Cabinet mulling over lowering fuel prices

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians may be paying less for fuel soon as the Cabinet is mulling over the possibility of lowering the present prices.
Several Cabinet Ministers said the matter was discussed during their weekly meeting Wednesday but declined to elaborate, saying that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was expected to make an announcement soon.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin said the possibility of consumers paying lesser for fuel was raised and that the mechanics were still being worked out.
Information Minister Datuk Shabery Cheek also admitted that the Cabinet was studying the matter.
"Let the Prime Minister make the announcement," he said yesterday.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad , however, declined to comment on the subject, saying that it would be best to wait for the PM.
The government, had on June 4, raised the prices of petrol and diesel, on grounds that that it could no longer continue to subsidise fuel, but give a 30 sen per litre discount from market prices.
Currently, Malaysians are paying RM2.70 per litre at the pump while diesel is priced at RM2.58 per litre.

tunku : flip flop, flip flop. they should have not increase the price to RM2.70 in the first place.they should increase it gradually.anyway if the fuel price is lowered, its good news for us.

Will prices of goods and services that have been raised following the recent increase in petrol/diesel price, be revised downward if the Govt reduce the petrol/diesel price? I bet it won't.

But after reducing it, and then let assume oil price moves up again, and the Government decides to raise it again even back to the RM2.70 level, I bet prices of goods and services will be raised one more time!

Government should look at economic price stability when deciding on petrol/diesel price, and not think like the corporate sector when making such a decision. Government's bottom line is not the main criteria, but the economic stability is the one.

So I agree with you Tunku, that the Government should not have raised petrol price to RM2.70 in the first place. Perhaps an increase to RM2.20-RM2.30 levels should be more acceptable.

Tapi apa nak buat, nasi sudah jadi bubur. We have a young and inexperienced person being the sole advisor for the economy of 27 million people.

I remember vaguely, one minister said to the news reporter, the government is doing a study on how to reduce the Toll payment in KL area. Wonder what happen to that?

Can government do work quitely, and just show us the result? No need to blow the trumpet or smash a cat to the wall when u are 'doing study'.

Government can work quitely when they are 'doing study' to increase the petrol price wasn't it?

Show result, talk later. The Rakyat would be please to get a result rather than giving their hope high....

Teruskan Pak Lah...

The government does what they see is necessary to be done, and given the volatility of the world market, that increment was inevitable. But it's good that they realize the hardship of the people and are willing to review their decisions, which in an indirect way is admitting that they may have made some mistakes in judgment. Isn't this what we want from government? Naik bising..turun pun bising..

Regardless the government bottom line is the Rakyat. This is showing that the decision to increase the fuel price is not a wise decision after all.

It had triggered the price of 1001items. The governent trying to save RM10 billion but the Rakyat end up paying RM10 billion X 8 = RM80 billion. Rakyat is facing a tough time now. What our leaders should do now is for once fighting for the Rakyat. But the other day all BN MPs agreed with the fuel price increased. Actually a totally blind and insensitive decision.

Salam Tunku,

You are right Tunku. The govt.
shouldn't have increased the
petrol price to such extend.

Now, Minister Shahrir, is very
cautious not to let the cat out
of the bag. I supposed he has
learnt his lesson.
