Ahmad Shabery Believes Fuel Debate Will Benefit Public

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Bernama) -- Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said he believes his debate with Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 15 will help the public to better understand why the government had to raise fuel prices last month.
He said that as the information minister it was his responsibility to provide an explanation to the people on issues in the country and that there should not be any anxiety that the government was taking a risk by holding the debate.
"I see Anwar as a bigger risk as he always assumes he is a great leader with many followers.
"The debate is also an opportunity for me to tell the people that his (Anwar's)ways are wrong and that he is not that great," Ahmad Shabery told Bernama at the Parliament lobby.
He admitted that the debate was something new in the country and there was bound to be concern among some of the people.
Yesterday, the up-coming debate received mixed reaction from parliamentarians.
Some backbenchers wanted the debate to be called off because they felt that it would not resolve any problem or change the differing views and that there was a possibility that Anwar would use it to further confuse the public.
The debate, themed "Form the Government Today, Lower Fuel Prices Tomorrow" and organised by news portal Agenda Daily, is scheduled to be held at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka here.
Several TV stations have expressed interest in broadcasting it live.

tunku : this debate should be carry on and we hope there is no cancellation. anwar had said that he wants to debate with pak lah or najib but if they are afraid then he's willing to debate with the ministers. for me anwar is only eligible to debate with assistant ministers level and lower. who he think he is? he is not pkr's president, hence he can't demand to have a debate with other party president.shabery has accepted the challenge and anwar should be grateful enough for that.

I too think it should go on, let's hear what Anwar has to say that's of any substance. or is he gonna turn it into a Greatest Man of The Year show again.

Actually, good point here. Why has he not go through the formalities of being the de jure president of the PR yet? why still de-facto? and the by-election, waiting for what? maybe he's got some other plan, so best not to commit himself to one party first?...

They should go on with this debate. We really want to see if Anwar's really true to what he had said.
Let's hear what he has to say about this issue.

hello tunku,

I don't care if he debates with any ministers or the government leaders anyway. I want to see his view and stands in reducing the fuel prices which he said could be done.

And yes your statement tunku is correct; he will help the public to better understand the government's decision in raising the fuel prices last month.

yup....the show must go on...lets see if he has a better alternative and all parties should see it objectively..if he comes out with a viable proposal that will benefit the country, why not? BUT considering the 1997-98 crisis, i doubted it...and knowing DSAI for being consistently inconsistent he will deflect the idea of debating with Shabery....

Rakyat masih tertunggu kebenaran...

It is only during Pak Lah's time that we can even have an OPPOSITION (ie PR) leader appearing on national tv. LIVE what not? Will this happen during past PM's leadership? Democracy, there you have it DSAI, along with your 15 minutes of fame on rtm.

I know that DSAI indeed is an excellent speaker, and no guesses who has better chance of "winning". But that is certainly not the case becos being in DSAI's shoes, he can say just about anything right now to look good to the public. Do or not, it is an entirely different story.
