KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 -- Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal Tuesday offered to contest for the Umno vice-president's post in party election in December.He said he made the offer to fulfil the wishes of the people of Sabah to see a better representation in the party and government.
Shafie, who is also Sabah Umno deputy chief, said his decision to vie for the post was supported by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman who is also Sabah Umno chief.
Shafie is an Umno supreme council member for four terms since 1997.
"I'm offering myself to help the party," he told reporters after opening a seminar on the national music Tuesday.
Apart from Shafie, several Umno leaders had expressed their intention to contest for the vice-president's post, among them Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Datuk Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi , incumbent Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam,Syed Hamid Al Bar, Datuk Sri Hishammudin,Zaid Ibrahim,Mohamad Hassan, Isa Samad,Mohd Taib,Adnan Yaacob, Shahidan Kassim, Rahim Tamby Chik, Mahdzir Khalid.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin has yet to decide which post to contest.
tunku : if there are more than dozen contenders for vice president post than it will be quite tough for muhyiddin, therefore he should go for deputy president post which he deserves.i guess shafie afdal has the right to contest and hope that he will be chosen as a vice president as sabah deserves to get one.

Sabah does deserve better representation. But I hope this is not a gross exploitation of the Sabahan's good name, just like what SAPP and their Master Yong did. Muhyiddin can go for deputy all he wants, but methinks UMNO might prefer stability of 2 top posts in its status quo than a new tide of leadership change at this juncture.

WOW. 12 contestants is going to go for VC Pres seats in the UMNO party. There are about 3 seats available. May the best man win the post.
Shafie Afdal should also be give the opportunity to contest for the seats. I also believe that Sabah deserves a better reputation and representation in the party as their contributions towards winning the general elections are quite big.
