KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- Wanita Umno deputy Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil Friday denied a claim by an Umno veteran that the party's women wing had been quiet since the March general election.
She said Wanita Umno was still very active and continued to carry out various programmes, especially for grassroots members.
"Today's women entrepreneurship workshop is evidence of the movement's not being quiet," she told reporters after opening the workshop organised by the Wanita Umno economics and entrepreneurship bureau here.
Shahrizat, who is the Prime Minister's adviser on women affairs and social issues, was reacting to a statement by Tan Sri Zaleha Ismail who said that Wanita Umno had become "quiet" after the general election.
On the decision by MCA central committee member and former Klang member of parliament Datin Paduka Dr Tan Yee Kew to quit the party, Shahrizat said Wanita Umno was disappointed with her action.
"In a party struggle, we should not be together only in good times, but also when facing challenges, especially in the Wanita Barisan Nasional struggle. This is the time when we need to provide support and strength, instead of leaving the party," she added.
On the entrepreneurship workshop, Shahrizat said it was organised to provide information on entrepreneurship, like loan application, types of products to market and on product marketing, for women entrepreneurs.
"There are many Wanita Umno members with potential to become entrepreneurs. What they need is some guidance," she added.
tunku : we can't see wanita doing anything at this moment.what we can see is that its chief rafidah aziz making statement that wanita support no contest for president and deputy post. actually rafidah is making this call just to safe her position in wanita so that no ones challenge her in wanita's contest. she is just like samy vellu, stubborn old lady.tan sri zaleha is very right, wanita umno is quiet.

As much as many would like to see contests for the President & Deputy President positions, I suppose many Wanita members would also like to see contest for the Wanita Head and deputy positions. Likewise the Pemuda Head and Puteri Head and their deputies.
If UMNO current leaders, repeat: "current leaders", delegates and members are matured enough, there should not be any split before and after the votings.
Any split will only show either the current leaders and/or delegates not matured enough for a country wanting to be a developed nation.
