Wan Azizah -- From Homemaker To Opposition Leader

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was the reluctant politican who was thrown into the spotlight, following the detention of her husband, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on corruption and sodomy charges.
Wan Azizah, 55, a mother of five girls and a boy, gave up her government job as an opthalmologist to be on Anwar's side when he was appointed deputy prime minister in 1993.
When Anwar was dismissed from Umno and detained for corruption and sodomy charges in 1998, she led the Social Justice Movement (ADIL), a civil rights non- governmental organisation (NGO) fighting for the release of her husband with assistance from her family, close friends and supporters.
From an NGO, Adil became the platform for the setting up of Parti Keadilan Nasional (Keadilan) on April 4, 1999, a political party, initially fighting for Anwar's freedom.
Wan Azizah was appointed its pro-tem president and later elected as its party president.
A few months later, the novice politican contested her first general election to defend her husband's parliamentary seat, Permatang Pauh, against Datuk Ibrahim Saad, who was then Permatang Pauh Umno division chief and deputy minister of transport.
She won the seat with a majority of 9,077 votes.
In the 2004 and 2008 general elections, she maintained the parliamentary seat against former National Mosque imam Datuk Pirdaus Ismail of Barisan Nasional.
In the March 8 election, Wan Azizah won by a majority of 13,388 votes against the Umno Youth executive councillor. She garnered 30,338 votes against Datuk Pirdaus' 16,950 votes.
In August 2003, Keadilan merged with Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) to form Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and she was elected the new president, a post which she held until Thursday.
With the party's big win in the 2008 general election, Wan Azizah was elected by the opposition parties as their leader in the Dewan Rakyat.
On Thursday, after holding on to the Permatang Pauh seat for three terms, she is letting it go to allow her husband to contest in the upcoming by-election to be held soon.

Tun Mahathir: My wife would do the same

Dr Mahathir Mohamad responded with his trademark sarcasm when asked to comment on his former protege-turned-nemesis Anwar Ibrahim announcing his decision to 'run' in a by-election.
"A loving wife could do nothing better... My wife would have done the same," replied the 82-year-old former premier with a grin when posed with the question during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.
He then turned to his wife, Siti Hasmah next to him, who flashed him a smile.
Mahathir also poked fun by asking if Anwar has undergone physical training to run.
"Has he been training in running?" he said in jest.
Just minutes earlier, Anwar announced at a press conference that he will be running for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat, which was vacated by his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today.
Wan Azizah - who is also PKR president and opposition leader - submitted her resignation to the House Speaker this morning.

i have deep sense of respect for Wan Azizah.a loyal wife and doctor who turns to be a politican.i know it's not easy to deal with all of this(Anwar case, family matters, party matter, parliament) but she stills keep going strong.i'm sure she has her own supporter.

but we cant deny the fact that she got supports because she's the wife of Anwar.

For Wan Azizah to "let go" of his position as Pematang Pauh MP to give way for her husband aren't really what we can say as "heroic".it's like Anwar take advantage of her wife position.then again i respect Wan Azizah for her willingness to do so.

Salam Tunku,

If Dr Wan Azizah still maintains her
disposition towards her husband
after these turbulent times, then
she should be accorded the "Isteri
Mithali 2008" Award.

Salam Tunku,
I can't say she is a good wife.
A good wife will right what is wrong.
A good wife will not prolong what is wrong.
But if you say she is a good wife for Anwar Ibrahim to take advantage off, then, she is a good wife.

Azizah has been good wife. She has been with the man she married through thick and thin. She has in a way influenced many to sympathise with her. She has also influenced many to understand what sacrifice means in life. I salute her for being such a good woman. I'm sure many women want to have this quality of loyalty to the spouse.
