Anwar Seeks Help From Former Indonesian, Filipino Leaders

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has sought the support of former Indonesian and Filipino leaders in contesting the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in a by-election on Aug 26.
Former Indonesian president Abddurrahman Wahid who is also Nahdlatul Ulama leader had expressed his support for Anwar soon after arrival at the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) office in Petaling Jaya Monday, said Universiti Sains Malaysia Social Science Studies Centre lecturer, Dr Sivamurugan Pandian.
He said this reflected as if Anwar, who is PKR advisor, was under increasing pressure and not confident of victory, so he had to seek help from his friends from neighbouring countries.
Sivamurugan said Anwar had also cultivated friendship with some American leaders since 1997 when he was in the government.
Abddurrahman or Gus Dur had expressed his dismay over the sacking of Anwar as deputy prime minister by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1998, said Sivamurugan.
"The question is whether the voters can differentiate whether it is personal support or regard it as foreign interference. This is not a wise move as it is only a by-election.
"The Americans had meddled in Anwar's sodomy charge and this affected the country's political situation. The voters must think whether we should have a leader who is attracting foreign sympathy," said Sivamurugan.
He said canvassing for support from overseas for a by-election could be detrimental to the country's political stability and create uncertainties.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Historical, Political and Strategic Studies Centre lecturer, Assoc Prof Dr Ahmad Nidzammuddin Sulaiman said Gus Dur and former Filipino president Joseph Estrada's support would not have any bearing on the voters' decision as their influence in their countries had plummeted.
"While Estrada had served time in jail, Gus Dur was toppled. They knew Anwar when he was in power. They should not interfere in the by-election," said Ahmad Nidzammuddin.
Historian Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim said Anwar was trying to portray that he had maintained friendship with several world leaders on a personal basis.
"It will not have any repercussion on the country as the friendship is personal in nature.
"Whoever he wants to make friends with, it is up to him. What is important is for the voters to determine what is good for the country and themselves.
"They must know whether they are choosing an honest and sincere candidate or one with a personal agenda.
"Foreigners do not know what the local people want. Only the voters know best what they want," said Khoo.

tunku : this is just anwar's excuse. he is sure to win the permatang pauh by election but still showing that he is innocent, wanting helps from outsiders.just imagine if this moron becomes the pm and had a slight problem,he will seek help from outsiders too.to me this is foreign interference but of all the people he's seeking help from losers like him.

Any person with pure conscience will rally for goodness. Any true friend will be by his friend's side through thick or thin. Your comment is so unreal! Get a life!

He is just trying to get a good relationship with them so that they will support him for becoming the PM. But this is the internal's affair, so its wrong here. He is just grabbing every opportunity he can to win the election and realising him dream.

i think there's no need to seek "help" from foreign (already plummeted) leaders. Both Suharto and Estrada had lost the people's confidence in them.Perhaps this is a strategy to show that he got connection with leaders of the world and that he's trustworthy.

just like what Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim said,"Foreigners do not know what the local people want. Only the voters know best what they want,".

Former Indonesian and Filipino leaders? I would always say that the so called leaders are the ousted leaders. GusDur was ousted by his Vice President Megawati in 1999 and Estrada got ousted by his Vice President Arroyo back then. They both have no credibility as leaders. Gus Dur's political party, PKB is currently in the rock and he got ousted by his very own nephew Muhaimin. Does Gus Dur has any "leader" material? Estrada was given clemency by Arroyo for taking illegal money from illegal gambling? Are these people Anwar making friends? Unless he is also a bg time crook.

Melebih-lebih la pulak.
Sekarang ni Anwar 'menebarkan' sayap kat Indonesia dan Filipina. Minta sokongan? Tak logik lansung..nak bagi tengok dengan rakyat la tu konon-konon macam orang kat luar negara pun simpati dekat dia.
Takut pula nanti dah jadi PM esok2, banyak sangat berdrama sampai tak sempat nak tengok hal-hal negara.
nak jaga populariti la katakan.
Kalau macam tu baik jadi pelakon.

with or without foreign friends the people will still vote for DSAI in permatang pauh just because UMNO and BN are at their weakest point after independence. UMNO seems void of credible leaders for now. mahathir was a charismatic leader and when he left the people are disappointed with many things now. scandals, corruption, cost of living, the economy, the judiciary, the police and etc., are all issues people are not happy with. it is not that DSAI is capable but UMNO and BN have lost their sting. let's not deny this. and with pak lah parading in permatang pauh talking about saiful's posterior... only proves that this man has no solid ideas how to counter the opposiiton.
