TRONOH (Perak), Aug 24 (Bernama) -- Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad Sunday said the reduction in fuel prices, effective Saturday, as announced by the government, was sufficient for the Malaysian people.
Dr Mahathir, who is Petronas Advisor, said the people should understand the current situation concerning the price of fuel and not seek for further price reduction.
"It (price) is already reduced. What more to ask. That's enough. Huge increase. Slight reduction. If it's reduced too much, it will be difficult to raise it again," he told reporters after Universiti Teknologi Petronas' (UTP) 8th convocation here Sunday.
Dr Mahathir is UTP's Chancellor.
On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced reduction in fuel prices of 15 sen from RM2.70 per litre for petrol, while the new retail price for RON92 petrol is RM2.40 per litre from RM2.62 per litre, previously.
In another development, Dr Mahathir said swearing the Islamic way should not be made a mockery.
"Swearing is a serious matter. They want to swear only to blame each other. I, too, could have sworn before because there were many accusations hurled at me, but I let the people to decide," he added.
He said this when asked on the challenge by Perak Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali to Perak Menteri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin to swear as he had done over a corruption matter involving two Perak state executive councillors.
Dr Mahathir said the case involving Tajol Rosli and Mohammad Nizar concerned a government agency (the Anti-Corruption Agency), unlike the sodomy allegation against Parti Keadilan Rakyat Advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim by his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, where the latter swore because there were quarters who suspected him of lying.
Saturday, Tajol Rosli swore his innocence that he was not involved in any political conspiracy or plan that had resulted in the arrest of the two Pakatan Rakyat state executive councillors for corruption this week.
tunku : about the oil price i think the best is for the government to stop paying rebate and reduce the price further as it will help all malaysian, not only to those having car below 2000cc.the goods price can be reduced as well by doing this. regarding tajol,he is too much. now don't make it a habit, evertyhing want to swear.saiful and anwar case is exceptional.that is different case, not involving bribe.
