BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- The Chinese community in Permatang Pauh wants whoever elected as its member of parliament to solve the nagging security problem in their neighbourhood.
For the past 10 years, crime has been on the increase and the residents are worried for their safety.
Taman Arowana, Taman Sama Gagah and Taman Cermai are among the areas which have recorded rampant crimes, according to the community.
Yee Hock Seng, 43, an air-conditioning contractor, said house break-ins and snatch thefts were a daily occurence in Taman Cermai.
"We hope the new member of parliament can represent the people here and deliver the message to the government so that something can be done to solve the problem," he said when met by Bernama at a coffee shop here today.
Yee said some areas in Permatang Pauh needed better infrastructural facilities, especially wider roads and better public transportation service.
Over the past 10 years, Permatang Pauh has not seen much progress except for Seberang Jaya, which boasts of a well-integrated township initiated by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to boost the administrative, residential, industrial and commercial sector of Malaysia's northern region.
The Permatang Pauh parlimentary seat fell vacant, following the resignation of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the constituency's member of parliament on July 31, to make way for her husband, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim Anwar to re-contest the seat.
In the March 8 general election, Wan Azizah polled 30,338 votes to defeat BN's Datuk Pirdaus Ismail with a 13,398-vote majority.
Anwar won Permatang Pauh seat in 1982 and defended the constituency in subsequent elections but had to let it go, following his conviction for corruption in April 1999.
He was sacked from Umno in September 1988 and is now the PKR advisor. Meanwhile, meat seller Yon Chai Soon, 40, said it was not easy to challenge Anwar, a former deputy prime minister who is known for his oratory skills, for the Permatang Pauh seat which has been held by PKR since 1999.
There are about 14,360 Chinese voters in the constituency which represents 24.56 per cent of overall 58,459 voters.
For the coming by-election, a few names have been mentioned as a potential BN candidate to challenge Anwar.
Among them are former PKR Youth chief Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor, former UMNO Permatang Pauh division deputy chief Datuk Ahmad Saad, former rural and regional development deputy minister Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman and Permatang Pauh division chief Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdul Majid.
tunku : i thought permatang pauh was booming under wan azizah. No? well, my sincere advice to permatang pauh voters, vote for the person who will work for your future there, not vote for the person who will be busy with sodomize case at the court(might end up in jail),busy hunting for MPs, busy plotting bad things etc.you will regret.choose a MP that will be there with you and work for you.

Saya setuju..Dah kalau jadi sampai macam tu apa maknanya? Wan Azizah tak buat kerja agaknya. Sibuk pergi mengekor laki membebel tepi jalan je ke. Tak payah laa undi mereka tu, bukan prihatin dekat rakyat sangat pon. Ni semua untuk Anwar jadi PM je. Sedar lah..
permatang pauh, enough is enough. already 3 terms given to wan jijah, what are developments by her there? nothing. all the while she is busy with her husband case and saving her husband butt but her husband doesn't spare others butt.
this is time to change, like tunku said, choose someone who will work for you not make life more difficult for you.
Totally agree. Why must you vote for a person who cares to have a pleasing time with a BOY rather than serving his people firstly? Vote for the person who will work for the peoples future there, solving the nagging security problem in their neighbourhood.
Until this 3 terms under wan azizah, what do the people gain? I guess there gain political talks more than developments and infrastructures in the rural and city areas. I wonder until this time what have they done with the money receive from the federal government? Don't tell me they used up for political campaign purposes and building their own mansion? That's cruel.
will Permatang Pauh gonna see a brighter days ahead if Anwar is the MP?.i dont know since Anawr is to busy on his target to become the next Prime Minister of Malaysia :)
1) voter to vote for the MP's of their choice who can focus on them not in the end busy fighting for other thing like closing of ISA and bla bla bla..
2) political party to appoint someone who can focus on the constituency well being.. not someone who can topple the other party coz they know the bad about those fella..
3) don talk and never walk the talk
4) when politiking, please no bad mouthing other people or the current government, tell the ppl what u can do.. and what u will do the sake of the people....
5) most of the MP riding on hope to be a minister or someone... can they just plain hoping to serve people? aren't they proud seeing development in their own place?
I agree with you on this tunku. But how mature ar the voters in permatang pauh? All this while they have been voting for YB Azizah... And we all know Azizah = Anwar all along. So people voting for person or party or the person's husband?
pity penang people, even their cm busy with anwar's court case, where else he should busy administrating penang. this is the problem whenyou make ex convicts as yr leaders.
hmm.... azizah all this while makes an excellent and loyal wife throughout the whole time anwar was not around. Probably she should just remain that. And nurul izzah too, that is too much pressure to be in politics because clearly she also part of anwar's gang...
What Permatang Pauh can expect from Wan Azizah ? To jaga one moron pun tidak dapat. Ini nak jaga thousands of people !!! Now the moron is coming. A rousing welcome ? Sure, because he is a super hero. To all young boys of Permatang Pauh, please wear your tight jeans. You never know...sometime when you least expected...oppp..suka sama suka lah.
