Tun Mahathir: It’s up to Mukhriz

CYBERJAYA: It is Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir’s right to contest for a seat if he wants to.
His father and former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he had not allowed Mukhriz to stand for elections when he was prime minister.
“Now that I am no longer prime minister, I cannot decide who becomes an election candidate. If others want to nominate him (Mukhriz), that is his right,” he said after attending a thanksgiving and welcoming ceremony for the new Multimedia University president Prof Zaharin Yusoff at the Cyberjaya campus yesterday.
He was asked about a report that Mukhriz was tipped to contest in the Langkawi parliamentary seat in the general election.
On a report quoting PAS spiritual leader and Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat as saying that Umno members were orang utans who do not know Islam or anything about the law, Dr Mahathir said: “There are Opposition leaders who are like orang utan too.”
