Government Not Slow In Tackling Current Issues - Najib

MELAKA, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- The government is not `slow' in tackling current issues which are considered to be of concern to the voters and people, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The issue on price increases, for example, was not something that was confined to Malaysia alone but was a global phenomenon due to the strong demand for all commodities, he said.
"These issues certainly have an impact but with the explanation given by the Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders, the people have regained their confidence," he told reporters after a meeting with government officers and staff in the state in conjunction with his two-day visit to Melaka.
He said this when asked to comment on a survey carried out by a local daily that pointed out that issues such as the crime rate, illegal immigrants and increases in commodity prices had caused public concern and would have an impact on the ruling party in the coming general election.
Najib said examples of the action taken by the government included the formation of the National Price Council where several new measures would be taken such as the Buffer Stock System and reviewing the subdisy structure and so on.
He said the issues on crime could not be blamed on the illegal immigrants entirely as there were also crimes committed by locals.
Nonetheless, he said, the people's support for the BN was getting stronger despite these issues although there were doubts about the support from the Chinese and Indian communities.
On his visits to the states to look at the preparation by the BN election machinery, Najib said everything was in `high gear' and they were eager to start.
He was also satisfied with the role of the Umno Putera and Puteri wings whose members were strongly committed and there were no negative stories on these movements despite being recently established.
