US cautions over sex charges against Anwar

The United States said today it would oppose any politically motivated investigation or prosecution of Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim facing fresh sex misconduct charges.
Anwar is being investigated over new allegations of sodomy, Malaysian police said on Saturday, the same charge that saw him jailed six years until 2004, when the charge was overturned.
The former deputy premier accused the government of concocting the new sex claims by a 23-year-old male aide and had briefly sought sanctuary at the Turkish embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, saying he had received threats and feared for his life.
"The main point for us is that the rule of law needs to stand above politics," said Tom Casey, spokesman for the US State Department.
"And we would certainly oppose any use of law enforcement or judicial procedures for anything other than legitimate purposes of the law," he said.
Noting that Anwar had previously faced similar charges and that his conviction was ultimately overturned, Casey said, "So, we would hope that there's not a pattern here.
"But, certainly, we would be concerned that anything that is done be done in a way that is appropriate, that is a legitimate investigation of charges that might exist under Malaysian law, and would not be anything that was a politically-motivated investigation or prosecution," he said.

tunku : of course america will be caution with this latest development because anwar is their hopeful person here. they want anwar to be the pm so that they can control malaysia.anwar is their puppet.

I absolutely agree with you tunku. US is interested in this case because something is in for them too. Malaysian should be really well informed by now that Anwar certainly has ties with US. Do we want him to sell our Malaysia to the hands of US?
Moreover, why do they-US have to interfere with our country?
Anwar, US, enough is enough.

How about the US not intervening with another's country affair where their presence is neither invited nor necessary? How about abiding by the United Nations Charter, that upholds the principle of sovereign equality amongst all its members? How about them realising that we are aware of their machinations of fabricating a humanitarian crisis or another to invade our sovereignty? The Malaysians are not stupid, we can take care of ourselves.

so it's not just a conspiracy theory that Anwar and the US have always been close, whilst the number of times he's has been put as the Man of The Year would be an indication, this pretty much confirms it. He's their puppet, trading our sovereignty with the US.

This is what the Rakyat could see right on their face. The actual political war right in front of us now is no more and no less between Najib and Anvar. The Premier Abdullah, Tun, Ku Li, Mahyuddin & Rais are just playing secondary roles, no more than that.

Perhaps this is a continuing Political War that was left behind idling the last 10 years. This is reintroduction as Chapter 2.

the charge was not overturned. He won his appeal on a technical ground, inadmissible evidence. there's a huge difference here.
