KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- Umno Youth executive council member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said Friday the voices of the grassroots should be respected and not stifled.
He said party members had the right to speak their mind so long as they did not contravene the party's constitution.
"We have the right to speak during meetings. I myself have written letters to branch chiefs urging them to suggest nominations (for party elections)," he said when met after the opening of the Franchise International Malaysia 2008 by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Jerlun member of parliament said those vying for party posts should be allowed to introduce themselves to the delegates.
He also said that it would not be fair to aspiring candidates if there were rules seen to be favouring the incumbents. "This is the time for us to institute changes in the party. We should give party members the opportunity to determine the leadership," he said.
He said he received numerous complaints about the conducts of the movement's meetings at the branch and divisional levels.
"There were reports that meetings were attended by unidentified members as well as members being promised with rewards and so on," he said.
tunku : we can only talk and talk and at the end of the day nothing happen as money talks. It's so sad.wish umno members will wake up before disaster come knocking it's door.
