Abolish UPSR and PMR exams.

UPSR , PMR exams may be abolished: Muhyiddin

MUAR: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examinations may be abolished.
He said this was part of government efforts to restructure the learning system that as seen as too examination oriented and failed to provide a holistic education.
"We are mulling whether to retain the examinations or abolish them leaving only the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)," he said after opening the Pagoh Umno division delegates meeting here Friday.
Muhyiddin who is also Education Minister said UPSR and PMR might be retained but only as school-based assessments and not as public examinations.
However, the ministry would not act in haste and wanted the public to give feedback to help improve the public examination system.
He felt that only one public examination was needed as only the SPM was needed when seeking employment.
As such, the UPSR and PMR could be used to pick students for residential schools or streaming.
"With only one public examination, the teachers and students can focus on improving creativity, interactive and co-curricular activities and sports,” he said.
The proposal to scrap UPSR and PMR examinations in the future appears to have supporters.
Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) president Jais Abdul Karim said the move would strengthen the education system and produce students who are more focused.
"Our system is too exam-oriented which stresses out the students and they study blindly to pass exams, without understanding its relevance for use in the future," he told Bernama here Sunday.
Jais said should they follow through with the proposal, the government would need to formulate a new method or mechanism to measure the achievement of student.
"A lot of goodwill comes from this move and teachers will also have more time to teach students effectively," he said.
Meanwhile, National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) president, Hashim Adnan said UPSR was still relevant and should be maintained, since it helped motivate primary school students to study hard.
However, he agreed with the abolishment of PMR as the exam's sole purpose was to determine which stream students would go to in Form Four.
"The UPSR is relevant as it ranks students and encourages them to do their best so they are more prepared to face secondary school," he said.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Education Service Ex-Officers Association (PBPPPM) liaison officer Abdul Karim Abdullah said the move was appropriate to ensure teachers and students have more time to focus on co-curriculum and sports activities.
"Previously, co-curricular activities and sports took a lot of time and distracted students from focusing on their studies, so this way the students will have more time for both their studies and their extra activities," he added. - Bernama

tunku : i think it is best that UPSR and PMR be abolished.we want our student to be more creative in their thinking instead of being exam oriented all the time.our education system must change in order for our new generation be able to excel globally. the ministry can introduce a new method to measure the achievement of student for residential schools or streaming.nowadays the children are pressured by these exams till they don't enjoy their childhood the way they should.some don't even have time to play with friends especially the primary schools children.

We should not abolish UPSR and PMR. In fact, both UPSR and PMR should be enhanced, to give more balance approach and format. It is effective tool for performance evaluation, motivation and incenive. Why we need to dismantle it? Just change approach and format, it is not broken yet.

Ever since the advent of the computer age there has been this urge to leap-frog.In many areas, yes, computer and chip technology can help you to leap-frog.In telecommunications the example is there to see.

The last place where computer and chip technology will allow you to leap-frog is education. You see the brain is abox that need life-long learning.Unless micrsoft can come with a chip when embedded in my brain will overnight make me a doctor. We learn from young and everyday we add to our memory bank. That is how the brain develops.

Before we can become creative we must firat learn to read, write and count. It is only with those tools can we read, retain and reproduce. That is the process. If you learn and cannot reproduce what you have learnt then it is labour lost. Do not blame the examination syatem. The system is intended precisely to help you to exercise your brain.

Creativity cannot be tahght. It comes from the learning process. The objective of education by the state should be designed to provide you with the tool to learn. What is education? It is what is left in you after you have forgotten whatever you have learnt.Ramalx

bagus cadangan ini, biar upsr dan pmr menjadi peperiksaan utk tujuan saringan dan bukannya peperiksaan awam spt sekarang.

Now the education system in Malaysia itself is a failure.. i can't imagine how would it be if PMR and UPSR are abolished.. in fact, like the one above said.. it has to be enhanced instead.. subjects like history should be cut off, students are just a photostat machine to say so, because it just depends on how good is their memory.. they got good memory, they can copy the whole things out, they score A+, and u call them 'Briliant sudents'. it should't be this way. in fact, the education system should put their concentration on the students' ability to speak, to intepret, to socialize... but not producing "Photocopy Machine"

lots of people talking abt the importants of exam, yes exam is important but here we r talking abt public exam like upsr and pmr.did the government say that there will be no exam at all?no, they only want to abolish upsr and pmr.the schools can still have the other exam like usual.
now it is all exam oriented.upsr / pmr.must get Assssss.who can be like photo copy machine can get Asssssss, others cannot.after the exam over, they forget.
i support the move to abolish upsr and pmr.waste of time.teachers can concentrate on how to make their students think well, speak well, making correct decision etc to compete in this world , not only in malaysia.

We should not abolish UPSR. It is the first public exam the primary students will be sitting after 6 years of learning. We have to test them by this exam. As a parent, i strongly against the idea of abolishing the UPSR exam.

Children in Malaysia is having too many EXAM compare other country.

There are 4 term of test to test the children level EVERY YEAR, every Mac, May, Aug. and Oct. IF your children is sitting for UPSR or PMR MORE WORST the whole year is EXAM EXAM EXAM only.

We adult have limit to complete thing, so do children. (Limit to study, limit to obey, if you push them so hard, sure one day they will tired or do something bad, for example, my friend daughter - She did good in UPSR (straight A's) as her mother ask her to, after going secondary school (form 1), she pregnant, mother shock, her daughter said: "I did what you ask me to (UPSR)". For the mother is proud but for the child is madness.

“Dalam soal kerjaya dan kerja, orang tak pakai lagi PMR dan UPSR, orang (bakal majikan) tak tanya pun keputusan PMR atau UPSR, sebaliknya hanya keputusan SPM dan peringkat universiti yang diambil kira. (WHAT HE SAID IS RIGHT)

Now the EARTH is change, let's our children learn how to protect themselve from danger

UPSR and PMR should not be abolished. i just graduated from secondary school, and i think those exam are still relevant to students. if there is no UPSR and PMR, government still cannot ensure all the student participate in cocurriculum activities. instead, students tend to be more relax, and not worried about their future. they might not even have their own ambition as they think they will still go to next level same like the others. unlike if there is still UPSR and PMR, students will sturuggle to achieve excellent result to get into boarding school and be 'somebody' in the future. so, everybody will study very hard and try their best. who wants to left behind just watching their frinds enjoying the offer to continue secondary education at famous school? it is like no exam, no motivation.

i believe in good education. Education is a journey not a destination. Govt must look into the chinese school with tons of homework everyday (10 homework a day)and left with those children are struggling every nite just because to complete their homework in time or else the teachers will cane them.
As for kebangsaan school , they are too relax with less homework.
Now the question is :- why the school system has gone haywire? It is because the internal exams are too many!!!! Some teachers in school are so money minded that they pushed the children to their home tuition and give them all their exams questionaires and let them pass with flying colours and those who did not follow their tuition will get very poor marks! it leaves the parents dumbfounded because they knew that their kids did well at home with their mum's guidance. Now if there is no upsr, then our kids in school will felt very unfair treatment because our children knows best their capabilities. As for evaluation, i don't trust the teachers in school anymore. i would rather the govt assess them fairly and stop all the nonsense that the teachers brainwashed them about going to their home tuition or after class tuition. i strongly believe that our children learn in school happily with good input by their respective teachers, twice a week they may have games in school. they could join in badminton, football, netball or volleyball. Mothers and tuition centres will take care of their schoolwork in the afternoons. Our kids will learn as much as they can without great pressure by the school teachers. As a mother i strongly agree by having upsr and pmr then my children are more discipline and motivated in their studies and also our govt can gauge our children performance. Look at the students today, for those who are in good classes, most of them have good foundation in their kindergarten - i salute all the kindergarten teachers who adopt our govt policies with 3M (menulis, membaca dan mengira). When my children goes to standard one, they are proactive and ready for the challenges in std 1. For those who are so weak in std 1, i can see the kids did not go to a proper kindergarten that stresses on 3M system. These so called development centres did not play a role in helping the kids to be ready rather the kids are so fearful when they go into standard one! Why? Because when they are 5 and 6 years old, they went to all kinds of learning which does not help them to be ready for std 1 so their self esteem and confidence drops to nil. thus when they enter std 2,3,4,5 and 6, they are dead ducks. So govt, pls appreciate the kindergartens that work closely with your govt (3M) and praise them wholeheartedly. When the foundation is strong in 3M private kindergartens (swasta), scrapping upsr and pmr is no longer an issue anymore.

UPSR and PMR should be abolished.

"Kiasu" is the word to describe lah if you ask me. The BIG QUESTION is does these exames REALLY MOTIVATE our children to READ they can be smarter or so that they can be a ROBOT and MACHINE? Come on, we all the answers yet we are still stubborn just because we are "kiasu" and wants to show off the no of As our children get?

Even our "kiasu" neighbour reform their education from QUANTITY based benchmarking to QUALITY benchmarking.

Come on.. change approach / format still going to make your children study till 2am midnight!

These two exams should be replaced with assignments / project based bench marking system. Let them have a quality life instead of living like a machine!!!

First of all, the government's reasoning to abolishing the UPSR and PMR examinations are from misperceived constructs. Like what Dr Mahathir Mohamad mentioned, it is not the having the examination that is wrong, it is the kind of examination that is wrong. If the government would like students to be more focused and interactive, the examination approach and evaluation should be altered, not taken away altogether.

It would be disastrous to remove the examinations from our present education system that is not as flexible as developed countries, where the insinuated amendment could be assimilated effortlessly. Our students depend heavily on their official grades for entrance to their choice of schools. Not only that, the results is much used to place students in appropriate classes according to their learning abilities so that they can grow and develop fittingly with the proper coaching.

If the standardized official UPSR and PMR examinations were abolished, students will have to rely on their school's internal examinations. The results obtained from one school cannot be relevantly compared to another school's because of the almost certain different degrees set. There will be no indisputable benchmark to assess individual student abilities. Thus, if students were to be evaluated from their own school's results, it will be unfair, dishonest and biased. Even then, the results could have already been doctored by the school's administration. There will be shameful bribery and more done by some parties to get the upper-hand in this situation.

Thus, the right move is not to abolish the examinations, but to incorporate extra-curricular activities and self-development studies into the examinations to make it more sensible and practical. I believe this is the only way to overcome the said dilemma, if the whole education system is not revamped completely.

Actually, abolishing PMR will reduce the stress on the students shoulder... parents will be competitive and would not pressure the children so much. However, there are going to be some negative effects as well. So, it is up to the government on making sure that it is replaced with something better... http://cosmocrazewoman.blogspot.com/2010/10/pmr-is-abolished.html
