Terengganu: Mercedes purchase was cost-cutting measure

KUALA TERENGGANU: The state government has defended the purchase of 14 Mercedes E200 Kompressor cars at RM3.43mil for the use of its state executive councillors and senior officials.
Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the state government had planned to purchase the cars for a long time now to replace its Proton Perdana V6 Executive fleet in a move to cut cost.
“Please understand that the Proton Perdanas go through continuous long-distance journeys. It's costing us a lot of money due to high cost of maintenance.
“We are not saying that the national car is not good but in reality we are coughing up more money for maintaining the Proton Perdanas, particularly the gear boxes,” he said.

Ahmad cited the example of the Proton Perdana of state Commerce, Industry and Environment committee chairman Toh Chin Yaw, which has twice undergone expensive repairs to the tune of RM50,000 in the last 36 months.
"In the long run, Mercedes cars are cheaper to maintain and could also save us fuel costs.
“This is the state’s long-term plan – we are farsighted. The cars could also fetch a high market price when sold as second-hand cars.
"We had evaluated from all angles before deciding to buy the Mercedes E200 cars,” he added.
Ahmad also denied that the oil royalty money was used to buy the cars.
"In the first place we have yet to receive the oil royalty from the Federal Government.
“The funds to procure the cars were from our own coffers and has nothing to do with the oil royalty money,” he said.

tunku : very unwise move by trengganu's government especially when going through economy uncertainties. why mercedes, why not just buy new perdana which will cost approx RM1.5 millions rather than spending RM 3.43 millions on mercedes. if the car repairs comes to RM50k, its better to sell off the car.you can always get a quote before repairing it.add another 50k can get a new perdana. pak lah is asking the rakyat to spend wisely, we hope that the government too spend wisely.anyway. perdana new model is coming soon.if the trengganu's government could have waited for it.in some countries, the government officers and leaders are only given national car as official car.

Perdana new model(coming soon)

Very unwise move I agree. Setting a bad example. Let's hear the national car rep explaining this.

Proton must improve before it can complain. As a former user of Perdana, I agree that it has so many issues esp gearbox. Consumption is high too. Resale value is very low. There is no free lunch.

Yup very unwise move and decision made by the terengganu government. Cost-cutting is just a lame excuse. Its obvious. They could just replace with a new perdana v6 instead of buying more executive e200 compressor mercz. What a waste of money.

not a very very very smart move.we're in a situation right now and they now wants new (mercedes) cars.there are many ways to solve the maintenance cost problem and buying new (expensive) cars is not one of them.

dont justify your act when you're already kantoi.

Unwise move but then again Proton cars are low in quality.
Something needs to be done about it. If the leaders are using imported cars then what will the rakyat think of it?
