Muhammad Muhd Taib Offers To Stand For Umno Vice-Presidency

SHAH ALAM, July 22 (Bernama) -- Rural and Regional Development Minister Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib today offered himself as a candidate for the Umno vice-presidency in the party election in December.
"I intend to strengthen the party in the face of new challenges, particularly in helping Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in regaining Umno's strength as the prime conduit in championing the Malay cause," he said at a media conference, here today.
Muhammad, who is also Umno information chief, said the party needed a working team who were sincere in championing the interest of the party and the future of the Malays, especially in improving the living condition of the rural Malays and the restructuring of society to take the Malays out from the clutches of poverty.
He said the task of the Umno leaders nowadays was to strengthen Malay unity at all levels, ensure that the Malays regained their economic and political strength.
Muhammad joins 15 other Umno leaders who have so far stated their intention to contest the vice-presidency.

tunku : should umno members elect someone bringing millions of ringgit cash in his briefcase to buy house in australia? he should not be in umno's top leadership or in the cabinet but pak lah saw mat taib as his die hard supporter, made him a minister even though he is not an elected member of the parliament.umno should get rid this type of leaders which will bring more harm than good.

this means there are still UMNO heavy-weight (no pun intended) who would still back AAB as the Prime Minister and Party President. not all bad. Hope this means the power-transition does work to quelch the turmoil within UMNO and that he can push through the things he want to do with more vigour. Things like the judicial reform, for eg, is where the inner resistance is as strong, if not stronger than opposition from outside.

i dont mind if he contest for the vice-president position.there's like more than a dozen candidates that contests themself for the position.so the probabilty for Taib to win is quite low.

nevertheless,goodluck!

Sebab kita memperjuangkan demokrasi, maka sesiapa saja yang berasa mampu untuk berkhidmat boleh menawarkan diri. Cumanya kita perlu pemimpin kana UMNO yang boleh berBahasa Inggeris.

I think that we should let him to contest for the post. The more contestant the better. At least we could choose the best among the best.

Let him contest for it.
The more the better. A wide choice and the decision can be made by carefully weighting each contestant.
Just be sure to pick the real deal out of the bunch.

It tells a lot when someone with dubious track record can come back without repenting what he did previously.
That kind of organisation cannot be effective to lead a nation.
The Leader of that organisation must go.
The sooner the better.
BTW, Juidicial reform is the last of my worries.
Effective government that creates wealth and security is what we need now.

there can be no real security without an impartial and strong judiciary, as the protector of rights, not privileges, and uphold the rule of law, instead of men.

WE should all be careful about each candidates in the election. Know their political history before voting... A silent prayer from a silent rakyat.
