Terengganu Government Misunderstood Treasury Circular On Car Purchase, Says Shahrir

PUTRAJAYA, July 23 (Bernama) -- Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said Wednesday the Terengganu government had misunderstood the Treasury's circular pertaining to the purchase of locally assembled cars when it opted to buy Mercedes Benz cars instead of the Proton Perdana V6 Executive vehicles for its state executive councillors and senior government officers.
He said the locally assembled vehicles referred to in the circular were vehicles such as jeeps and four-wheel-drive vehicles.
"I understand that they have misunderstood (the treasury circular) because some government departments have the need for four-wheel-drive vehicles. If they have to buy a jeep, it should not be an imported vehicle but a locally assembled one," he told reporters after chairing a post-Cabinet meeting at his ministry, here.
The Terengganu government had said yesterday that it would use the 14 Mercedes Benz E200 Kompressor cars designated for the use of state executive councillors and senior government officers as the purchase was in accordance with Paragraph 6 (II) of Treasury Circular No. 1 of 2008.
Shahrir said the matter was discussed at Wednesday's Cabinet meeting and the discussions were centred on the treasury circular.
No new decision was made because the circular stipulated that the cars for members of the administration such as ministers, deputy ministers, parliamentary secretaries, political secretaries and state executive councillors were locally assembled vehicles, he said, adding that for members of the administration it was specifically the Proton Perdana V6 Executive.
He said that if there were problems with the Perdana car, the state government should have given inputs to Proton to step up the quality of its product.

tunku : i guess mat said eyes got blurred while reading the treasury circular as he can only see the mercedes cars. proton said no warranty had been claimed by trengganu's state since 2004.perdana has 4 years warranty period.i hope that the ACA should look into this matter. go through all the maintenance bills which is too much , hundred of thousand.something wrong somewhere.

Its obvious their cute cat eyes are aiming for luxury and prestige brand cars like merz.

Now they can calculated the maintenance cost for 4 years without delays, but the cars is not in the garage for the previous 4 years.

I won't mind if they bought the cars with their own money, but if instead using rakyat's money to buy the cars is unforgiven during the bad economy crisis of our country.

Government office that need to use 4WD?
Lately, I've seen a lots of Toyota Fortuner with Gov Office badges on its body and question arising from this, does this Gov body really need those big, heavy, bulky SUV?
I've been discussing this matter with my Members of Kedai-Kopi-Parliment and yet to come up with a better reason for them to use it others than for good looks.. come on guys.. petrol price is quite high.. If the used of it to travel to deep-deep jungle to reach out to rakyat.. so be it.. no need to drive it out for lunch rite? a small wira is enuff rite? or if u wan to 'angkut' lots of ppl.. u can use a Perodua Rusa .. oh wait.. that's so not fashionable to be seen in a Rusa rite..

ahhh..sorry a poor man like me cannot understand a rich man's logic like that. this also goes to show how unfair it is to load the blame of all the wrongs in the country unto the top person, which i see happening quite alot recently, and unfairly so.

Simple suggestion to Ahmad. Just return the Mercedes.

With the circumstances that Rakyat is facing now Ahmad decision for Mercedes is totally insensitive to the actual economic scenerio out there.

Or if Ahmad and the gang still struggle for that Mercedes i think they all should pay it using their own money out of their own pocket.

Maintenance cost as a reason just to justify their decision. No more and no less.

One more thing you are the servant for the Rakyat. Use the Rakyat fund wisely. This is just a surface of one of your poor decision. Ahmad has to go back to the right track.

Agaknya kenapa kerajaan Terengganu (sebelum ini) tidak servis atau "repair" Perdana mereka di Proton Edar Service atau EON Service? Tetapi di tempat lain?
