Mukhriz Suggests Umno Branches Propose List Of Candidates For Top Party Posts

JERLUN, July 25 (Bernama) -- Umno Youth Executive Committee member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir has suggested that the Umno branch delegates' meetings propose a list of candidates for each of the party's top posts.
He said this would ensure that the voices of the people were heard and that the potential leaders received the support from all levels right down from the grassroots, besides ensuring transparency in the party polls.
"The results of the last general election should bring about realisation that the wishes of the people should be fulfilled through the party elections.
"Hence, I am in the process of sending letters to about 22,000 party branch heads throughout the country on my proposal," he said when met by reporters after a meet-the-people function at Batu 7, Jalan Sanglang, here Friday.
"All this while, only about 2,500 delegates to the party's General Assembly were the ones choosing the party president and the other top leaders, including the Supreme Council. "It is more apt if the right to choose the leaders be delegated to the grassroots as they better represent the country's 27 million population compared to only 2,500 party delegates."
Mukhriz said his proposal was also aimed at empowering and benefiting the branches as members present at the meetings would be involved in choosing the party's top leadership.
"This will also help bring the party leaders closer to the grassroots and curb money politics." Mukhriz said he himself would monitor the resolutions on the lists of candidates, and had attached the proposed format to his letter to the branch heads.
On the Umno-PAS "muzakarah", he said he fully supported the dialogue as it would give strength to the Malays and build solidarity following the outcome of the last general election.

tunku : by right, it's not fair for 2500 delegates to decide on behalf of 3 millions members. hope the branches will be brave enough this time. enough is enough. we can see the trend, the branches says something else, the divisions will say something else. the branch says that they want new president in december 2008, the division says that they support the transition plan. even the division supports the branches but when it comes to the delegates who will be voting, the votes can swing the other way round.money politics will be at its best again. its easier to buy the delegates than the branches.so let the branches decides, who they want and what they want.

semua ahli umno perlu mengundi pemimpin pilihan mereka, bukan hanya segelintir delegasi yg mudah dibeli.

If our top leaders really honest about fighting money politic in the party for sure they should let the grassroots voting for their leaders. Let go back to basic of democratic process.

Even in our country general election every one of us as a citizen could vote. I dont think anything different with letting UMNO member to vote for their own leaders.

By doing this i think money politic would disappear giving time. At the end the UMNO the party that would benefit in the long run.The leaders produced via this process would be more stronger in leadership quality and would be more like the actual pemimpin rakyat.

Salam Tunku,

That's the way to do it, from bottom
to top and not from top to bottom.
Also do away with this ready made
list of candidates from sky kingdom.
Can Mukhriz do it? He's kind of
"Lone Ranger" in this.
All the best to you Mukhriz.

Amin.
