The Rule Of Law

by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad

Malaysia is a country which practices the rule of law. Our laws must cover every aspect of our societal life, so we will know exactly what we can do and what we cannot do. Prime Ministers in particular must have everything spelt out for them in this respect. This will enable them to be charged if they had breached the rule of law long after they had retired. Governments, serving Prime Ministers and Ministers are well placed to initiate action against others. But when the Government, the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister do something wrong, like cover-ups for example, then police reports may be made against them. But how can the person reporting be sure that the police will investigate without fear or favour. I believe some reports have been made but so far there have been no results. Public confidence would be undermined if investigations by the proper authorities are not made. If the investigation is only to clear the name, then can we say the rule of law is being properly practised? We therefore need to have more Royal Commissions manned by people of impeccable character like the ones on the Lingam tapes. The Commissions can then make proposals based on speculations and possibilities can then investigate the possibilities and probabilities and help clear those in power. When this is done we can say that this beloved country practises the rule of law.

In case of Ezam former PKR youth leader i think he had done good things by setting up an NGO as a watchdog for BPR and government. He could play a good roles to fight to clean up the government and society from corrupt practice. He has been trying to disassociate his movement from PKR. A move on a right direction.

His move to join UMNO for potential materials gain has clouded all of his action in setting up this NGO. We need a watchdog group to better UMNO and Barisan. In case if they dissappear like a smoke in long run it would not be beneficial to us. They all would be making a lot of noise at initial stage which is good for our awareness. Our mistake is when they are not making anymore noise or are busy with resolving the issue or has being able to see the issue face to face with the government of the day we absorbed them into our side. Same thing would keep repeating in these NGOs. Issue would be recycled and same old things would resurface. It a never ending story.

Sometimes it is better for these peoples to stay outside of our ruling party or Barisan. They would be better of to keep playing a watchdog group for our independent alertness on certain important issue in the eyes of our civil society.
