Ku Li Suggests Election Of Umno Leaders Through Polls By All Members

KOTA BAHARU, May 30 (Bernama) -- Gua Musang Umno division head Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah suggests that leaders at all levels in Umno, including the president, be elected through the polls by all party members.
In doing so, he believed, it could restore the party's image which had been dented following the March general election.
"We give back the power to the people by allowing them to choose the leaders at all levels through votes or other mechanisms," he told reporters after opening the Kelantan branch of the Council of Former Malaysian Elected Representatives (Mubarak) here Friday.
Tengku Razaleigh, who is also Gua Musang Member of Parliament, said Umno's 3.4 million members should be allowed to decide on the leaders in the party, at all levels, through votes.
He also suggested that the person be appointed for the post of the party State Liaison Committee Chairman be decided by Umno division leaders in the respective states, instead of the party president.
Tengku Razaleigh said that as an Umno member, he felt it his responsibility to make the suggestions with the intention of restoring Umno's image.
The suggestions had been raised by Tengku Razaleigh at the Umno general assembly in 2004.

tunku : this is what mukhriz has suggested too. this will be the best way to elect the leaders instead only fews can vote and to curb money politics.

Actually the one that afraid with a democractic process is the Leaders themself.

Umno Branch for example is mostly just many in numbers but not really full functioning branch. Most of the UMNO branch only good on paper but so weak and disfuncion in organization. It is all because the leaders at branch level. Start examine all the UMNO branches and grade them accordingly. Repair and reorganized all UMNO Branches with Grade B and below. It is about time we check our own reality.

Introduce a real democractic process from bottom up. Educate all UMNO members with basic information about "Malay in Constitution".

By introducing a real democratic process in UMNO would scrafice certain leaders from bottom up but it is for long term survival of UMNO as a PARTY for another 62 years. It is part and parcel of making UMNO fully awake and alive again post PRU12.

Polls by All Members? Knowing the Malays are, then we have nothing else to do but politicking.
