Boo Chang may join another party

PENANG: Controversial politician Lim Boo Chang, who crossed over from Gerakan to MCA eight years ago, has not ruled out joining another political party.
The former two-term Datuk Keramat assemblyman who recently resigned as a MCA life member, described himself as a “free man” and welcomed opinions on his new blog on whether he should stay on in politics or quit.
“I am still getting feedback from my friends and family on my next course of action. Meanwhile, I started a blog on April 19 because I now realise that constant social reform is an on-going process. We must always improve.
“If I decide to continue in politics, I will join a party that shares my ideals for social reforms,” said Lim who is a lawyer.
On whether he was worried about being labelled an opportunist for party-hopping, Lim said in politics, it is the intention that matters.
“One cannot make a decision out of fear. If we party-hop for selfish reasons like personal gain then yes, it may be construed as an opportunist move. But if we quit one party to join another because it provides a better platform for us to pursue our political ideals, then I don’t think it is being opportunistic,” he said.
When contacted, state PKR secretary Abdul Malik Abdul Kassim admitted that Lim was “very close” to the party.
“In the last few months, he has been very close to us but I cannot comment on his membership because there is nothing in black and white yet,” he said.
Lim, 53, faxed his resignation letter to MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting on April 4. He resigned as Kampung Lembah Ria branch chairman and Bukit Gelugor division committee member.
Right after the 1999 polls, Lim and another Gerakan assemblyman, Lim Chien Aun created an uproar when they crossed over to the MCA and deprived Gerakan of two state seats.
Lim was not fielded in the recent general election.
He last contested in 2004 but lost in Bukit Gelugor.
