BSA Tahir Was A Threat To National Security, Country's Economy - Syed Hamid

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- Buhary Seyed Abu Tahir or better known as "BSA Tahir" was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) after investigations showed his actions posed a threat to national security and the country's economy, the Dewan Rakyat was told Wednesday.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said investigations revealed the Sri Lankan businessman had links with an international network involved in the proliferation of nuclear weapons technology to Libya.
"He had also made Malaysia as a place to produce centrifuge component units," he said when replying to Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir (BN-Jerlun) during question time.
Syed Hamid said BSA Tahir also had links with the network of Abdul Kader Khan, the expert responsible for turning Pakistan into a nuclear-power nation and was involved in developing nuclear weapons for Iran and Libya.
"If these networks are not scuttled, they will expose Malaysia to breaching its commitments to the United Nations resolutions on the proliferation of nuclear energy weapons.
"It can even cause economic sanctions to be imposed on Malaysia and harm bilateral relations with certain countries," he added.
BSA Tahir was detained under ISA on June 2004.
