Suhakam lashes out at US report

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has lashed out at a report by the US Government, listing Malaysia as one of the worst offenders of human trafficking, and open to possible sanctions.
The recently released report place Malaysia in Tier 3, categorising the country as one whose Government does not fully comply with the minimum standards and is not making significant efforts to do so on the issue.
It further stated that Malaysia failed to show satisfactory progress in combating trafficking in persons.
These include punishing acts of trafficking, providing adequate shelters and social services to victims, protecting migrant workers from involuntary servitude and for not prosecuting traffickers who were arrested and detained under preventive laws.
"Suhakam disagrees with the allegation that there is a weakness in enforcement of the law of the country regarding this issue.
"The recent tabling of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons by the Cabinet itself shows the Government's seriousness in combating human trafficking and human rights," Suhakam Commissioner Datuk N. Siva Subramaniam told a press conference Thursday.
The Bill was to provide protection for victims and make it easier for the police, immigration and relevant authorities to pursue, prosecute and convict traffickers.
Relating to the results of the US Trafficking in Persons Report, Siva said he was disappointed that Suhakam had not been approached or enlisted to aid in its study.
"Compared with other countries, we have been very vocal and stern in addressing the issue of human trafficking.
"Suhakam and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have contributed tirelessly such as conducting regular visits to detention camps and other holding areas to make sure those detained were not living under inhumane conditions,” he said.
