Candidate For By-election Must Have Solid Support Of Local Community - Muhyiddin

PUTRAJAYA, FEB 11 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) must field candidates who are not only acceptable to the people, but also have solid support of the local community to ensure victory in the two coming by-elections.
Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this today in reference to the coming by-election for the Bukit Gantang parliamentary constituency in Perak following the death of the incumbent MP Roslan Shaharum on Monday, and another for the Bukit Selambau state seat in Kedah following the resignation of its assemblyman V. Arumugam on the same day.
Muhyiddin, who is International Trade and Industry Minister, said the candidate factor was a vital one, hence the party leadership must consider this carefully so as to field the best candidates for the two seats.
"Their character, personality, knowledge and experience are among the criteria, besides being an effective worker and able to shoulder the trust given and responsibility to the people, and being clean and free of scandals and public's negative perception."
He was speaking to reporters after closing the Public Sector Young Executives Conference 2009 on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, Wednesday.
Muhyiddin said BN might have a good chance of winning the two by-elections with the people having seen for themselves the instability in Pakatan Rakyat (PR), with the opposition parties pointing fingers at each other after the PR government collapsed in Perak recently.
He said another factor what would help BN was the BN government's willingness to make changes in policies and approaches as demanded by the people, and these were announced by Najib recently.
"But we do not want to be smug, but be pragmatic and not take things for granted, especially when we had problems in earlier by-elections," he added.
On preparations for the coming by-elections, Muhyiddin said the BN election machinery should start establishing close rapport with the voters and getting feedback on issues that might be raised during the by-election campaigns.
"We want to see cooperation and unity, which will be instrumental for victory in the two by-elections, so the BN local leaders and members must work closely together," he said.

tunku : the keyword for BN success here is the candidate. The candidate plays a very important role now.we have seen it at kuala trengganu.the other important aspect is the bn machinery. they have to really make sure this time that the machinery works 100% round the clock till the end.this seats belongs to the pakatan, hence it iwill be double load of work for BN to win it back.

BN people should concentrate more on winning the by-election rather than bringing their feud between eachother that can jeopardice the chances of BN to win.this is what happened back then at Kuala Terengganu by-election.they got so caught up with the problem that are not concerning the by-election thus making the BN machinery not working properly.

things shouldn't happened like that.just look at PR.eventhough there are disagreement between some of the leaders but they still work in one unit.

BN should overpower and create the image that they're far competent and better than PR.
