Malaysian woman conquers Mount Everest

KATHMANDU: Marina Ahmad, 25, an assistant producer with RTM, became the first Malaysian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest yesterday.
She was the sole woman in the seven-member Merdeka de Everest 2007 expedition, which set out to conquer the world’s highest mountain standing at 8,848m above sea level.
Six of the seven team members stood at the peak at about 6.30am local time (8.45am Malaysian time).
A spokesman for the expedition’s secretariat at the Everest Base Camp said the first person to make it to the top was RTM cameraman Idris Said, 51, followed by Everest 2004 chief climber Muhammad Fauzan Hasan, 39.
The rest were another 2004 National Everest hero Ahmad Reduan Rozali, 25, Mohd Rafi Kori, 35, and Ahmad Fakhri Abu Samah, 25.
However, due to poor health, expedition leader and the oldest team member Datuk Khalid Yunus, 64, had to return to the base camp after reaching Camp 3.
The expedition was held in conjunction with the country’s 50th independence anniversary this year. – Bernama
