DAP national chairman Karpal Singh
today insisted that PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim state
his stand on Hudud Law (Islamic Penal Code) and Islamic State pursued
by PAS, their ally in the three-party opposition pact.
As the prime minister nominee of the opposition pact, it was incumbent
upon Anwar to clearly voice out his stand on the two controversial and
critical issues, Karpal said.
He said PAS leaders' plan to implement hudud and to turn Malaysia into
an Islamic state had affected the mutual understanding among the allies
in the opposition pact and admitted that the two issues would give an
advantage to Barisan Nasional (BN) in the May 5 general election.
"I think Anwar should clearly state his stand. I think the people are
expecting it. (DAP adviser) Lim Kit Siang and (DAP secretary-general)
(Lim) Guan Eng have stated the party's stand, they're not for hudud,
they are not for Islamic state," he told a media conference.
Karpal said he was stating DAP's stand not only as his personal stand but also on the party's behalf.
PAS deputy spiritual adviser Datuk Dr Haron Din had said recently the
party was firm in implementing hudud law if the opposition pact was
mandated to form the next government.
However, Karpal opposed, saying DAP was against the formation of an Islamic state, which enforced hudud law.
