Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today received membership application forms to join Umno from 530 former PAS members in and around Selama in Perak.
Three hundred members from Kampung Raja Bersiung, 130 from Kampung Tapah and 100 from Kampung Parit Dalam handed in their forms to Najib, who is also Umno presidet, at a "people's feast with the prime minister" at Sungai Bayor primary school field.
Former Larut Area PAS committee member Abdullah Man, 63, said he was utterly disappointed with PAS' ideals and struggles which had far deviated from its founding objectives including on the issue of the usage of the world "Allah" by non-Muslims.
"We'll help the Umno election machinery to explain to the people on the bickerings in PAS to deter others from being hoodwinked by the party leaders," he said.
Meanwhile, 150 youths from 1Malaysia Selama pledged support to BN and submitted membership forms to join Umno.
Their representative, Shahul Hamid, 28, said only BN could helm the country as there was lack of mutual understanding among the allies in the opposition pact.
Also present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Hamzah Zainudin, who is also the incumbent BN member of parliament for Larut.
Earlier, Najib performed Friday prayers at Al Aziziah Mosque as part of his packed itinerary to Perak today.
Clad in a blue turquoise baju Melayu, the prime minister arrived at the mosque at 1.20pm and was greeted by the mosque committee members.
He then joined about 1,000 Muslims in Friday prayers and listened to the sermon.
After prayers, Najib shook hands and exchanged pleasantries with the congregation before proceeding to attend the "people's feast with the prime minister" at a primary school field.
Najib also handed land titles to 70 Sungai Malau Felcra settlers.
