Foon Yew High School, the largest
Chinese independent high school in Malaysia, celebrates its 100th
anniversary today with a special gift from Prime Minister Datuk Seri
Najib Tun Razak.
Najib, in 'An Evening with the Prime Minister' event organised by Johor
Baharu Barisan Nasional (BN) here, approved the construction of the
second branch of Foon Yew High School in Seri Alam, Pasir Gudang.
"I hereby announce that the government has approved the construction of the second branch of Foon Yew School," he said.
He said the construction of the new branch of the school was vital to accommodate the rising number of its students.
Meanwhile, Foon Yew High School Management Committee vice-chairman Tong
Sing Chuan, when met at the event, said there were indeed very happy
with the announcement.
"We will build the new branch on an eight-hectare site in Seri Alam,
Pasir Gudang. The first branch of the school is 10 years old now and can
no longer accommodate the rising number of students," he said.
Tong said there were over 10,000 students currently studying at the
school's main campus in Stulang and its first branch in Kulaijaya.
It is estimated that about 6,000 students would sit for the school's entrance examination each year.
"We are thankful to Najib for approving the construction of the second
branch of our school. This is indeed a very special gift for the
school's 100th anniversary," he said.
