PKR will not reject hudud

KUALA TERENGGANU: PKR will not reject outright PAS’ plan to implement hudud law, said its de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He also dismissed Karpal Singh’s remark that such legislation was unconstitutional, saying that the DAP chairman was making a general statement.
He said there was no need to reject the proposal as it was only applicable to Muslims.
What was needed, said Anwar, was an in depth discussion among Pakatan Rakyat partners on contentious issues which had resurfaced following a debate between PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa and Umno Youth deputy head Khairy Jamaluddin.
“Hudud is not something new. There is allocation for it in Islam. This is what PAS has been saying all along, that it is solely for the Muslims,” he told reporters after launching the PKR main operation room for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election yesterday.
According to Anwar, all opposition parties understood Islam and that its legislative aspects should not just be confined to Syariah family or civil law.
Describing himself as a practising Muslim, Anwar stressed there was no blanket answer on hudud and that he would not emulate what former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad did, which was to oppose and reject outright hudud law when PAS first proposed it without fully understanding the issue.
He said detailed discussions on the issue could clear the air.
He also urged all dissenting voices to study the specific proposal and its provisions closely before opening their mouths.
Anwar also hit out at the media for attacking PAS over the hudud proposal and conveniently forgetting that it was the government that had declared Malaysia an Islamic nation.
“I do not understand why the media is harping on it. It is a non-issue in this by-election. The bigger issues are the policies of Barisan in contrast to what Pakatan is trying to do. That should be the focus,” he said.
He also said the alliance between the opposition parties was developing into a compact front despite the media’s reports on rifts in their pact over certain governance and political policies.
“We are not Barisan Nasional where supposedly Umno dictates and others just follow. We practice democracy,” said Anwar.

tunku : with the by election in terengganu coming closer, anwar came out with this statement that pkr will not reject hudud proposed by pas. what say dap? will they agree too and what about the non muslims in pkr ? i'm hope to see this moron be punished under hudud law for sodomizing...what it will be like?

imho,PAS is just playing around with the idea of hudud because they know the Malays make up the majority in KT.and you know Malays they're very sensitive on religion.but i dont really know if that sentiment gonna work out for PAS.

BN is also in danger.with Najib involvement in KT by-election,PR gonna play around on the Atlantuya issue eventhough Najib stressed that the case got nothing to do with by-election.PR also did their character assasination on Wan Ahmad Farid.BN have got to counterattack this.

no party is really dominant in KT.Both UMNO and PAS had the pleasure to rule KT but this time once again no one knows for sure of which party gonna take over KT again.50/50 so to speak.

I think Anwar got it wrong by saying that Dr M opposed & rejected outright Hudud law without fully understanding the issue.

What Dr M said was to reject the proposed "Hudud PAS" which contained several injustices. It simply cannot be equated to the real Hudud of Islam when "Hudud PAS" would punishes victims of crimes but set free criminals.

Dr M delivered his speech in great length elaborating those injustices in Kelantan way back in 1994, and a few others after that. His articulate explanation showed that he had scrutinized "Hudud PAS" that I found Anwar's statement simply absurd and facts twisted.

Although the real Hudud of Islam allows "less harsh" punishments on non-Muslims (like less harsh punishment for non-married couples compared to married ones), the jurisdictions do not 100% exempt non-muslim from it.

I wonder what was Anwar's intention when he said that "Hudud PAS" applicable only to Muslims? It seems that Karpal knows "Hudud PAS" much more than him.....

When Anwar accused Dr M did not understand this issue, has Anwar undesrtood it all?
