'No rush to decide on medium of instruction'

PUTRAJAYA: There is no rush to make a decision on whether the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English should continue or revert to Bahasa Malaysia.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said any change could only be implemented next year.
“We are nearly at the tail-end of looking at all the details gathered,” he told reporters after delivering his New Year message to his ministry’s staff.
What was more important, he added, was that the ministry was satisfied with the views, suggestions and ideas from all parties before a decision was made.
The teaching of Mathematics and Science in English policy was implemented in phases, starting with Year One, Form One and Lower Six in 2003.
Hishammuddin had said earlier that it was time to look at the policy after six years "based on facts, figures and an absence of emotion.”
He said the Cabinet would make the final decision.

tunku : if the decision on whether the teaching of maths and science in english should continue based on facts, figures and an absence of emotion, i am sure it will continue as the facts and figures are encouraging. only the unnecessary emotion is discouraging it.as a parent, i want it to be continue.

i have two views in this matter.

first,i don't mind in math and science should continue to be teached in English if the majority of the kids can master or at least understand english language to the extent that they can learn math and science in such language.

secondly,i do have problem with the implementation if the kids mostly cant get a good grip and understanding of english and whatmore to ask and force them to learn math and science in the languange they're not really familiar or comfortable with.and to add more salt to the wound if the kids aren't really good both in math/science and english.

I agree continue with the english medium. However I believe Hishamuddin will only declare the status after March UMNO election. He have to secure his election "no cacat".

My wife is a primary teacher. Most problematic is government didn't prepare for it. The implementation from the human resources(Teacher also need to upgrade), and supports (courses & monitoring)is not there.

Majority chinese oppose it, majority Malays oppose it, Indian just tak apa.

The only group support it is from intellectual malay, professional malays & National education background chinese.

it is a pity. 90% i believe it will be canceled.
