Construction Of Penang Monorail Tracks To Begin Soon

PENANG, March 22 (Bernama) -- Construction of the RM1.2 billion Penang monorail tracks is expected to begin soon once the routes are approved by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU).
State Executive Councillor for traffic management Datuk Dr Teng Hock said the routes proposed by the state government were being considered and an EPU technical team had visited them recently.
"We are waiting for a report from the EPU and if everything goes well, construction will get underway," he told reporters after opening the Industry Expo 2007, here Thursday.
The monorail is one of two mega projects in Penang announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad last year, the other being the RM2.6 billion second bridge of which preliminary work has started.
In another development, he said that those commuting to the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone would have another option in using public transport when RapidPenang starts operations in August.
He said people would be able to use a dedicated bus to go to the various factories, hence reducing congestion in the area.
Statistics show that 150,000 vehicles pass through the zone daily.
He said existing bus companies could continue with their operations provided they abide by the conditions stipulated in their permits.

tunku : how soon will it be and who will get the project? well one of the company who bids for it is scomi.
