BIDOR: Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek will propose to the Cabinet Friday the cancellation of the Dewan Rakyat live telecast.
The minister cited the misuse of the telecast by Opposition MPs to play up trivial matters as the reason behind his proposal.
He also apologised to Malaysians for allowing the telecast, saying that it had tarnished the reputation of Parliament as an honourable place.
Ahmad Shabery said he did not want Malaysians to lose their belief and trust in their elected representatives for fear that the future of the country's politics and democracy would be lost for good.
"If the public see their MPs behaving like this, they will lose their belief in them. This is dangerous because they may also lose their belief in the system of government," he told reporters Thursday after giving a motivational speech to Umno grassroots leaders at Kampung Batu 1 here, about 70km from Ipoh.
He added that it was clear from Wednesday's sitting that the MPs were only putting on a show because of the live telecast as after the cameras were switched off, "proceedings went on as normal".
"For the first time in history, only three questions were answered in 90 minutes.
"If this is the result of a 30-minute telecast, imagine what would happen if we aired the entire thing. These MPs will do anything to interfere with the process by bringing up trivial matters," he said.
Ahmad Shabery noted that some politicians might feel the live telecast was an opportunity to show the public the kind of Opposition MPs they had elected into government.
"Maybe some Umno people may feel this is a good thing for they could just sit back and let the public see for themselves the true behaviour of these Opposition MPs.
"However, my ministry is not a ministry for Umno but for the public and we have to convince the people that Parliament is an honourable place," he said.
tunku : let the public see what happens in parliament.after all it's the public that had elected them to parliament. this will be the best way to judge their elected representative.we can see who speaks for the nation and who speaks for himself or for his party only.i hope that the parliament proceedings should be aired live from the start till it ends, not just 30 minutes.

the minister should have thought and know what to expect with the kind of mps we have right now before and making decision to have the session carried "live".
bad decison to scrap it now... let's the rakyat decide notyou or the pm. let the rakyat know the true picture and character of our mps... or is it because bn mps aer not capable to cunterback the opposition mps? it's a shame really. the rakyat are looking for an intellectual session but if the mps are doing it otherwise let the rakyat and the world know how 'not clever', not matures the mps are...
shabery chik... now it's time for you to resign too with our pm. i'm sure we have capable mps in parliment or is it due to the incompetency of our pm, dpm and ministers and bn mps to counter the 'attack' by the opposition that the 'live' session need to be scrapped?
let's the session go 'live' for few sessions and then let's the rakyat decide! (whether to proceed with live session or to elect the 'not so clever' or boastful mps in the next election!)\
Democracy is easy saying and declaring. Mr. Information Minister should start to respect what the democracy is all about. Let the Rakyat see themself and judge themself about their MPs in parliment. Even without telecast i dont see the parliment would run as the government see it or want it as before. Let the flow of democracy alive. Democracy is like a medicine sometimes its bitter, sometimes its tasteless but the medication is for good result. Along the democratic process of course there are many other symptoms will come out but it is always for good of democratic causes. Only whom who want the benefits of the medicine could take the medication. One who is truly afraid of reality will always with the symptoms and real sickness and thought they are not as sick as peoples thought. They THOUGHT they are still ok.
