KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- The Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club wants the 10 per cent discount given to private car owners using the North-South Expressway and the North-South Central Link to be extended throughout the day, and not just applicable from midnight until 7am, as proposed earlier.Its chairman, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, said the discount should not just be limited to private cars but also be extended to other types of vehicles, including lorries.
"Why do we need to encourage people to use the highway from midnight until 7 in the morning? Are you saying that it is safer to use the road at midnight than in the daytime?," he asked.
Speaking to reporters at his office in Parliament building here today, Tiong said feedback from the people indicated their disappointment because they felt the government was insincere in giving the discount.
On Tuesday, PLUS Expressways Bhd, the operator of the two highways, announced that users of Class 1 vehicles would enjoy a 10 per cent discount on toll rates for two years, beginning Jan 1.
The company also annnounced a further 10 per cent discount for those travelling on selected days during the festive seasons.
tunku : not only the backbenchers want it extended through out the day but every and each motorist using the highway.if they(plus) really wants to help, give discount through out the day as not many people using it after midnight except for pontianaks.after all plus made profit before tax about RM1 billion.

saya berpendapat pemimpin umno harus berhati-hati dalam isu seperti ini. apabila menteri turut sama mengumumkan potongan tol tengah malam tu, orang akan kata umno tak cerdik. saya faham menteri dan plus berniat baik, tetapi kita harus berhati-hati agar tidak bertambah persepsi buruk. fikir dulu sebelum bertindak.
