Indonesian Maids To Get One Day Off A Week

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 (Bernama)-- Indonesians maids in Malaysia will be given one day off a week and be allowed to keep their passports during their stay in the country.
The Home Ministry, in a statement Wednesday, stated that the rest day requirement would be enforced after amendments were made to the Employment Act 1955.
These terms were agreed upon by Malaysia and Indonesia at the third meeting of the Working Committee on the Recruitment and Placement of Indonesian Maids on Aug 20, it added.
The Malaysian delegation was led by the Home Ministry Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam.
The meeting also agreed that the temporary work permits of Indonesian maids who ran away from their employers would be revoked immediately and the maids would not be allowed to enter Malaysia again to work.
It said the meeting also agreed on the salary range for Indonesian maids in Malaysia where the starting salary will be determined by market forces.
The committee will hold its fourth meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia, this Saturday, where among the issues to be discussed will be on the fee structure for employment of maids.
This is important because it is a burden for Malaysian employers who have to cope with the high cost imposed by maid agencies, it added.
The issue on the fee structure has not been solved since the second meeting in 2007 following Indonesia's failure to submit a new fee structure to be considered by Malaysia.

tunku : first the government should give the employers a guarantee that the maid will not run away or if they did , the agency will give a free replacement.if they can't assure the employers of this important issue then forget about the off day and on top of it they want the employer to give the maid their passport too.what a ridiculous idea.some are not bothered if they are not allowed to enter again if they run away as they can come in with a different name anytime. why the home ministry can't resolve the maid agency fees issue when it is the most important issue for them to solve it? don't simply come out with new things when you still have pending issues and please allow maids to come from more countries especially from third world countries.with proper training they can work even better than the indonesian maid.

i totally agree with you, these indonesians dont care if their passports are revoked if they run away. They can at anytime enter malaysia again using different identity, even applying a new KTP (Kad Pengenalan Diri Indonesia)with a different name and age is so easy there. Perhaps our Menteris or all those officers involve making this agreement dont even know about this consequences. Can someone highlight this to the Ministry concerned? I m sure the no. of cases of the maid run away from employers will increase sharply after the implementation of thE new system.
