Indonesia wants at least RM800 monthly for maids

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesia will demand a minimum monthly salary of RM800 for its domestic helpers at a bilateral meeting with Malaysia to be held in Jakarta on September 5 2009, Indonesian media reported today.
According to an article published by Kompas online, the remarks were made by Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia Da’i Bachtiar during a breaking of fast with some 400 Indonesian migrant workers at his office here Thursday.
His servants received RM400-500 per month, but since March 2009, their wages had been raised to RM600 per month under an extended employment period.
Any Malaysian employer wishing to have their domestic helpers’ employment extended for another year or two, will be obliged to pay their domestic helpers at least RM600 a month. "Otherwise we will not extend their work contracts," the one-time Indonesian chief of police said.
But in the upcoming meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia will demand a monthly salary of RM800 per month for Indonesian domestic helpers. Indonesia and Malaysia will have a bilateral meeting to revise their 2006 MoU on the recruitment and placement of Indonesian informal workers in Malaysia.
Two weeks ago, the Indonesia-Malaysia working group met in Putrajaya and reached several deals, including the Malaysian employers agreeing that passports are held by their domestic helpers who also will be entitled to a day off each week, regular wage increases, revision of cost structure, and a task force to monitor the implementation of bilateral agreements and the revised MoU.
"As long as no agreements had been reached, and to be followed by the siging of an MoU or new contract on protection of Indonesian domnestic helpers in Malaysia, the decision to stop the dispatch of domestic helpers to Malaysia would not be revoked," Indonesian chief delegate Arief Havas Oegroseno said recently.
Indonesia stopped sending domestic helpers to Malaysia on June 25 2009, prompted by several cases of abuse by Malaysian employers.

tunku : our government should not entertain this indonesian's crazy demand. most of the degree holder can't get RM800 in indonesia in a month and their maid is asking for RM800. as i said earlier, it is about time for malaysia to look maids from other countries such as africa, middle east etc.language is not a problem, it can be taught.don't bother the indonesian.we should teach them lesson now.

Assalamualaikum Tengku,
Im agreed with u. Why must let them determine minimum payment?. Who are they?. The quality of services very poor. I think better we look for others. If RM 800, better i pay for phils, atleast my child could learn english.
My expirienced meeting bilateral with our counterpart, Indonesia showed that they are very errogan. Still refered to past history that THEY CLAIN THEY TEACH US ABOUT SCIENCE/ MATH, THEY SEND THEIR TEACHERS HERE BEFORE ETC. One rude things happend when one international programme held in KLCC, which is we were provided to all of the ministers a Baju Malaysian Batik BUT their minister did not wear it. They wear their batik - u see, how eroggan thay are. When somebody ask the officer why their minister didint wear the baju batik, they said the Indonesian Batik lebih baik. Cammon dude, PLEASE RESPECT MALAYSIAN AS AN ORGINASIZER. I THINK THEIR PEOPLE STILL IN DREAMING. THEY CANNOT ACCEPT THAT WE-MALAYSIA ALREADY INFORNT OF THEIR COUNTRY 2/3 TIMES AHEAD.
POOR THEM.
SO....PLEASE OUR PM, WE PLAY THE BALL DONT LET THEM PLAY.

Yup , Teach them a Lesson . RM 800 is equal to the salary drawn by the graduate in Indo itself.

We can always look for the resource from other country . But Please ..no more from Africa ....We already have enough Semi-Criminal from those country...

For RM800, one can get a good dedicated Malaysian Maid. Very professional in their approach.

I am a Malay Muslim but my maids had always been Chinese, presently I have with us an old lady, who takes her job seriously and had been with us for many years.

I never have problems, if she goes on leave, she will personally train a temporary helper to take over, according to her very strict and organised routines.

Don't depend too much on foreign maids, we still have so many in Malaysia who are willing to come work for us.

But we need to change our attitudes. Treat them well, pay according to their performances, reward them and most importantly, as they are part of our household, give due respect of their contributions and treat them as part of our family.

I just wonder whether our Human Resources minister is a Welfare Officer or really a Minister to event want to talk about this mtter.

In Indonesia Rm8oo is equivalent to income of a Bank Officer.

Just wonder whether the Minister involve really know about the maid market in this country.

By the way by allowing the maid to hold their passport and if they run away by black listed them make no different as they could obtain an Indonesian passport easily with different name as they wish.

Talking about red tape. Have money will travel.

I agree with you Tunku. But this is a tough call. Those in the can now do not mind paying the amount. The difference is maeasured against the convinience. Those outside the can have the luxury of stating their views without fear or favour. Comparisons or odious. Many Malaysians are working overseas on a salary we pay our Prime Minster.Ramlax
