How much longer will you rein Samy...

Samy Vellu was officially installed as the MIC President at the party’s general assembly last week. He won the post uncontested after the nomination of his contender was rejected in March. This enabled him to hold the post until 2012.
Although he had indicated that he would relinquish his post after the party’s elections in September, he had changed his mind. On the contrary, he wants to complete his term by giving an excuse that he had to stay on to resolve the tussle for the deputy presidency.
It seems Samy becomes the longest serving political party president the country ever has. When Awang became a journalist 25 years ago, Samy was already the MIC president and a cabinet minister. Samy led the party since 1979 as acting president before he was formally installed in 1981, thus reigning for 11 terms.
While UMNO and MCA have gone through two successions in six years while Gerakan (one), MIC is stalling its transition of power. Despite MIC giving its worst performance ever in the last general election with Samy himself was unseated in his stronghold, Sungai Siput, he is adamant about staying on as president. Even if some may say that he is a liability to BN, MIC and the Indian community, he is unperturbed. He turned a deft ear to the criticisms. Who cares about being responsive to the people, what matter most the post must be defended by making justifications. As such the hopes pinned by those in the MIC, the Indian community and the people for Samy’s to make an early exit, fizzled.
To Awang, Samy is a great politician. It is not easy for a leader to stay on for so long. It is felt that no other politician could erase his record.
Without denying his contributions to the Indian community, Awang feels that the former works minister has to face the political reality of the day. The longer he leads MIC, BN will continue to be pinned in a difficult situation. Don’t forget that MIC is not independent entity, it is a BN component party. If Samy says he want to stay on to help restore MIC and BN, it doesn’t help. Only his departure can help BN.
If he refuses, the transformation pushed by BN under the tutelage of Najib Tun Razak is seen as incomplete. Moreover Awang doesn’t feel there is a dearth of leaders in the Indian community. Why not give the opportunity and confidence to others?
So once again Awang would like to relay the message of the people to Samy to step down shortly after the party’s election in September.
Hand over the reign to whoever is elected as deputy president to be the acting president. Three are three contenders for the post, namely incumbent G. Palanivel, former deputy president S. Subramaniam and former vice-president S. Sothinathan. (It is rather strange that Samy takes side in the deputy presidency race, openly supporting a candidate. He was even present to lend his support during the nomination. His action was criticised but as usual he was outraged and vent his anger, especially at Subramaniam.
His antics did not reflect the democratic spirit – that is Samy.) Awang hopes Samy have the heart to step down earlier. For many quarters, Samy will be undaunted by calls for him to relinquish his post as he is seen to have too much love for his post that he ignore the surrounding.
Samy is also categorised as the untouchable. The assumption might be true but for how long....

tunku : it is true what Awang said, samy damn care about the Indians in Malaysia.what is important for him is to stay as long as he could as the president.i am sure that many indians have rejected the pakatan rakyat after the last general election after being played out by them but they refuses to join Mic and the reason is only 1, that is samy vellu.samy vellu made Mic as a liability in BN. now he want only his man to get the deputy post, thus he is accusing all nonsense things about the other candidates.his man, palanivel will succeed him(if it happens) and will make sure his son vell pari will be taken care off .Mic members should have the guts to ask him to step down asap after the Mic's election.be brave and dare to change.
