Rafidah will defend Wanita chief post, June plan in question

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz says she will defend her Wanita Umno Chief post but remained mum on whether the June transition plan is still on.
In a handwritten 10-page letter Rafidah who is the Kuala Kangsar MP said she valued the nominations she received and would defend her post for the 2009 - 2011 term.
“I am leaving it to the delegates to decide on which leader they want for the 2009-2011 period,” she said.
Rafidah who was supposed to handover the post to her deputy Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil in June, three months after the March party election, said she was disappointed that the transition plan had been disputed and rejected now when it had been accepted by the exco earlier when it was first mooted.
On Thursday, Shahrizat who received enough nominations to contest the Wanita Chief post said she would take on Rafidah for the post.

Rafidah: We'll meet in the ring

The two leading ladies of ruling party Umno have declared war over the influential post of head of the women's wing, after the grassroots turned against incumbent Rafidah Aziz.
Rafidah, a fiery political veteran who served as trade minister for two decades before being dumped from the cabinet earlier this year, had hoped to hold onto the position until next June.
In a transition plan criticised by many in the women's wing, she wanted to be reaffirmed as chief in March party polls before handing over to her deputy Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
Shahrizat had insisted she would not challenge Rafidah, but after being nominated as women's wing chief by dozens of Umno divisions in the run-up to the internal polls, she threw down the gauntlet late yesterday.
"Wanita Umno must be united in strengthening the party and be bold in bringing about change and renewal," she said in a brief statement.
Rafidah, a fearsome character who made a splash on the international stage during her years as Malaysia's trade chief, immediately accepted the challenge and said she would stay on for another three years if successful.
"We will meet in the arena in March," said the "Iron Lady" of Malaysian politics, according to the New Straits Times newspaper.
80 percent rooting for Shahrizat
The state news agency Bernama quoted several Wanita Umno leaders who supported Shahrizat's decision to stage the first contest for the job since 2000.
"Believe me, on the surface, many Wanita Umno division leaders may seem to be supporting Rafidah Aziz. But inside, more than 80 percent of them are for (Shahrizat)," said Senator Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain.
Others said they were still hopeful that Rafidah would agree to bow out in March and avoid yet another battle for a top post in the party, which has been in disarray since unprecedented losses in general elections this year.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has agreed to stand down in March, handing over to his deputy Najib Abdul Razak - triggering an unprecedented showdown for the number-two job.
The influential position of youth wing chief is also up for grabs, with contenders including Abdullah's son-in-law, who is vying against the son of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.-AFP

round 1 - fight!

we shall witness some of the biggest fight in wanita UMNO history.who shall outwit who?

it's 50-50 chance to win for both candidates.i'm sure Rafidah still have her loyal fans around her belt.but that doesnt mean Shahrizat should give up that easily since she's also start to receice support from wanita UMNO all over Malaysia.

Rafidah should have just leave like years ago.she has been in service for far too damn long.the women in UMNO need new face as their leader.they just dont feel "moving forward" when they have the same leader for many many years.

precisely that Shahrizat has been given no choices.what's good for her if she will only play as leader and not became a real leader when the power transition takes place.this is "now or never" for Shahrizat.either she pass this test with flying colors or she will only just fall short on her attempt for the top post.

the bottom line is,those who are the grassroots are in favor of will win the chief seat definitely.

Dear Tunku,
Be careful with what you wish for: "suddenly all the transition plans were off".
Anyway, can Sharizat make it happen for Wanita in the next elections?

The top echelon of UMNO has changed and the new leadership wants all new running mates. It is not tough to imagine that Rafidah ,an old hand and an old face in Wanita, must go.

Among values of democracy is "clash of ideas'. That would transpire better solution and plan for party members. In addition it would also bring about a strong leadership.

Surprise to note "clash of ideas" is the most UMNO leaders want to avoid. Which is wrong. Clash of ideas would make UMNO more mature and stronger in and out. Unless our leader willing to accept this basic values of democracy it it doubtfull coming this PRU13 we would be able to maintain or gain more support from the voters.

It is become a clear cut and obvious to the voters that UMNO leaders only care about their own survival not for UMNO member survival or Rakyat. Money politics, power transition, quota system and party unity are all being created by our UMNO leaders to preserve their power.

Contest or no contest actually a no issue supposely in UMNO. But our UMNO leaders make a fuss out of it. It is actually not an issue at all in democratic society. UMNO the party would not stay relevent for long if our leaders still maintaining this altitude.

Rafidah actually very experience in goverment as a an UMNO wanita leader. The longer she stay put the more fatal to her political future. With all those experiences she should stand for deputy president or vice president in the party. Actually after all these years she is a good material for that. But i am pondering of why she does not want to move forward for betterment of wanita and UMNO.

It is about time also for UMNO to accept Rafidah as one of their top leader. For sure if she earlier decided to go for it the wanita would 110% supporting her for that. That the way to unite the wanita forward.

One thing for sure if Rafidah lost this contest against Shahrizat her chances in UMNO top leadership also destroy. In general Rafidah is making a fatal mistake for deciding to stay put on top of wanita leadership despite a desperate need for her contribution as one of UMNO top leaders.
