Don't Become Puppets, Zam Reminds Students

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Malaysian students overseas have to have inner strengths to avoid being made a tool to defame their own country, Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin said.
He said students who studied in countries having different cultures, religions and politics, should not let themselves being easily influenced.
"Not only Malay students should have inner strengths, other students also need to have it because they too are susceptible to influence," he told reporters after presenting a working paper at the Umno Overseas Club Leadership Course here.
He urged the students not to betray the country without them knowing it merely because they wanted to be heroes.
Students should be firm and careful because many quarters were trying to take advantage on the younger generation including by offering cash as a reward, he said.
Pertaining to the philosophy of the New Economic Policy for example, Zainuddin said, students should have confidence in the agenda aimed at developing the country even though the policy was badly criticised by the West.
He also said that inner strength was also important in ensuring students avert immoral activities.
"Actually, not only the personality of students overseas need to be safeguarded, those of local students also because studying overseas is not the only cause of social problems," he said.
Earlier, Zainuddin and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar discussed issues relating to national politics and globalisation as well as the role of communication in building an innovative nation.
The two-day course involved 150 students and was held in conjunction with the Umno general assembly next week.

tunku : i agree that student should not become puppets and being made tools by the political parties but my strong advice to UMNO delegates for the coming assembly, please DO NOT BE PUPPETS and being made tools by the leaders. Voice out and don't be scared.

all the delegates will just shut their mouth and say yes to everything the leaders tells them to do. there is no more "jantan" in umno currently.

There are also cases of leaders becoming puppet of their followers.
