'Give Down's syndrome kids more chances'

KUALA LUMPUR: Children with Down's syndrome must be given more opportunities in all sectors, including employment. Down's Syndrome Association of Malaysia patron Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said: "We don't have much to offer to Down's syndrome children here compared with more advanced countries."
However, said the Jerlun member of parliament, the Disabled Persons Act 2008 will address these issues and look into creating job opportunities so that these children can be independent.
Speaking after launching the association's gala fund-raising dinner, he said there were an estimated 50,000 Malaysians with Down's syndrome, many of whom were kept at home because their parents did not know what to do with them.
"We hope parents can come and interact with us at the dinner. We might be able to give them some pointers on how to take care of their children."
To be held on April 3, the dinner aims to raise funds for the branch associations in eight states.
Kuala Lumpur Tower has donated RM20,000 and pledged RM10,000 as start-up capital for every new home that is opened.
"We know how hard it is to open a new home," said KL tower chief executive Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad.
