GMP To Stage Gathering Outside Istana Negara

JOHOR BAHARU, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- The Movement Opposing the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in English (GMP) has assured the police that a mammoth gathering being planned outside Istana Negara on March 7 will be non-violence.
"We have yet to obtain a police permit but we believe it will be approved as it will be a peaceful gathering," its chairman, Emeritus Prof Dr Abdullah Hassan told reporters here today.
National laureate Datuk A. Samad Said said the implementation of the policy contravened Article 152 (1) and 152 (6) of the Federal Constitution on the use of Bahasa Melayu for all.
"We are not opposing the use of English in the pursuit of knowledge but are upholding what is enshrined in the constitution on the use of Bahasa Melayu to unite the people," he said.
GMP committee member Ainon Mohd said the implementation of the policy did not justify the teaching and learning of English as a language.
She said to improve the command of English among students, the government should provide every school with an English laboratory while enhancing teachers' English teaching skills.

tunku : police should not allowed such gathering out side istana. they can have the gathering in appropriate place such as in a hall, stadium etc.this small group does not represent the majority, they are the minority who trying to "kill" the future of our kids and the future generation.

Salaam,
I beg to differ on the notion of teaching Science and Maths in English or any other foreign language, for that matter. This is perhaps the only one idea of TDM, which I am not a supporter of.
The problem with our kids (generation born after the late 70's)is their poor command of language, both BM and English. So instead of "punishing" them with adding more exposure to English in other subjects, the Government should work towards improving the teaching of BM and English. Otherwise give an option to state/school/teachers to teach in BM or English and have the papers in 2 languages. Parents can choose which school they want their kids to learn at. My humble opinion.

Jika marahkan nyamuk jangan dibakarkan kelambu,

Jika ANDA SEORANG YANG BODOH dan LEMBAB dalam BAHASA INGGERIS jangan ingat SEMUA ORANG BODOH dan LEMBAB seperti ANDA.

Salaam,
I'm sorry if I have offended some. I was only expressing an opinion. I believe I do not fall under the category of "stupid" as generalised by awang bemee. I went to ordinary day primary and secondary schools in Muar, did my A level and read law in UK up to postgraduate level with the government scholarship. I grew up reading both Malay (rumi & jawi) and English books and scored good grades in Math and Science (I was in the science stream doing Biology, Physics and Chemistry - all taught in BM). I had no problem learning A level and law subjects in English and understanding technical specifications/drawings now in my line of work.
I couldn't agree more with Mr KETAM that we need exposure to the language and technically "pressure" to use the language but to "expose" these kids at the expense of them not understanding their Maths and Science is something we should seriously ponder. It's the standard of English (and BM) which needs to be increased. Subjects like Maths and Science require full comprehension and such is possible in a language which the kids feel belonged. Let there be a choice for them which language they are comfortable with. But at the same time improve the English through other means which they do not feel pressured into. It worked during my school days. Despite being ordinary schools, both my alma maters scored high percentages (read more than 90% passes)in all subjects for all major exams.
Most of our teachers are not ready to teach in English, to explain in English and to answer the kids' enquiries in English. My elder sister is in charge of teaching teachers who teach Science & Maths and she is of the same opinion. The teachers command of English is too low with less than 20% being really ready to proceed with the "challenge".
Let's not talk about what has been done to "memartabatkan bahasa melayu" because the issue at hand is our children's grasp of basic Science and Maths. Don't make them suffer just because some party does not do their job. The kids’ moral and morale are already deteriorating, let's not push them further down.
I'd rather have a mat rempit who speaks little english but a genious in Math and Science rather than a pompous arrogant queen's english speaking lawyer who doesn't know what a 5% discount mean.
I rest my case. I may have some/many mistakes in my English which may further offend some.

My command of English is way above par and better than yours, and I oppose PPSMI. It is the implementation of the PPSMI policy which will destroy the future of this nation and proof is provided in the TIMSS 2007 report:

http://www.menj.org/dasar-ppsmi-projek-gagal/

Proponents of PPSMI have failed to justify the implementation of this ridiculous policy.

Inferiority complex is usually a common feature amongst those who promote PPSMI. Mr. KETAM is probably one of those people.

menj,
because of you high standard english and much better than most of us make us want to support PPSMI more and more so that our future generation will have good command of english like you.
we kampung people, study locally, never been abroad , so we need this system.

awang bemee, it is people like you with their short-sightedness that will doom this nation. This is not the correct way to master ANY language, including English. What use would PPSMI be if students are sent to South Korea, Germany, or Japan?
