Local Councillors From Kedah Umno Asked To Resign

(Bernama) -- All the 1,938 members of the Village Security and Development Committees (JKKK) as well as members of the District, Municipal and City Councils from Umno have been asked to resign effective yesterday following the defeat of the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state in the March 8 general election.
Kedah Umno Liaison chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the decision was reached at a meeting of the Liaison Body chaired by him at the Kedah Umno headquarters, here last night.
He said all the JKKK members, appointed for a two-year term by the BN government in 2006 and last year, who attended the meeting agreed unanimously to resign.
"However, effective yesterday, all the JKKK members will be appointed as Federal JKKK members and their appointment would be gazetted in the near future," he told reporters after the meeting.
Mahdzir, who was the former Kedah Menteri Besar, said the functions of the Federal JKKK were similar to that of the state JKKK.
Earlier, all members of the local councils from the BN component parties had relinquished their posts after the BN lost in the state in the recent general election.
