KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 (Bernama) -- The reason why many people resort to blogs is to get alternative news, because of the mainstream media (MSM) are not reporting "both sides of the coin", said a local online news editor.
S. Vicknesan, editor of the Malaysiakini news portal, said this brought bloggers into conflict with the MSM because they (bloggers) filled the void caused by the MSM.
"If the MSM is allowed a reasonable amount of press freedom in future, the public will get a more accurate account of what is actually happening and will not resort to bloggers much for alternative news," said Vicknesan.
Vicknesan said this during a question and answer session at a forum entitled Reflections on Malaysia's Checks and Balances: The Role of the Press at Malaysian Institute of Integrity near here, today.
The forum was organised by the Malaysia Think Tank London with the cooperation of the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI).
Others who spoke at the forum were the chairman of MPI and Bernama general manager Datuk Azman Ujang, political editor of The Sun Zainon Ahmad and Group Chief Executive Officer of the KRA Group, Karim Raslan.
tunku : till today the mainstream medias still spinning news.most who have internet access nowadays believe and rely on the news from the net compare to the mainstream medias.if they don't change sooner they will lose out.

I thought in journalism we should be professional, ethical and resposible to report the truth and facts without taking sides or making any judgemental statements. I see our main stream media have none of this. Be it local news or international, the reports sound so personal! Macam sembang kat kedai kopi je!
YOu are absolutely correct about the mainstream media not allowing balanced news such that the rakyat are forced to turn to the bloggers in the alternative media. Would you agree with me if I say that the alternative media should thank the mainstream papers for all the hits they are getting at their websites because the mainstream media carries only news on the BN?
