Angry Keng Yaik calls Kah Choon an opportunist

Former Gerakan president Dr Lim Keng Yaik has criticised former protegé Lee Kah Choon for lacking principles by seeking greener pastures with the new Penang Pakatan Rakyat government.
“This young man (Lee) is not willing to struggle anymore. He is trying to take short cuts. Don’t tell me he is not in active politics anymore. He is still very much in it, but now, with a DAP agenda,” he said.
Speaking during a press conference after addressing a forum in Kuala Lumpur today, Keng Yaik dismissed suggestions that Lee’s resignation was a loss for the party.
“No. The sooner you can see the (real) face the better. No principles. No spirit of struggle and wants to take the easy way out,” said Keng Yaik.
Describing himself as a “disappointed and angry old man” over the matter, Keng Yaik said he shouldered the blame for grooming Lee as a prominent leader in the party.
“I’m disappointed and angry because he was picked by me. (Acting Gerakan president Dr Koh) Tsu Koon should not be blamed,” he said.
Lee left the party yesterday following the party’s decision to issue him a show-cause letter for accepting Pakatan’s’ offer to helm InvestPenang and Penang Development Corporation.
Previously, Lee had quit all his party posts, including that of deputy secretary-general, in view of the party’s disastrous performance in Penang in the March 8 polls.
Guan Eng cunning
Keng Yaik said Lee’s appointment to the two posts were glaring examples of how the Pakatan state government lacked capable leaders to run the state.
He described efforts by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to rope in Lee as a form of “poaching” which he also repeatedly described as “froggy politics”.
“And Guan Eng has the gall to say that this is a ‘new era’ of politics. My foot! He is a far more cunning politician than his father or Karpal Singh.
“I don‘t think his father or Karpal would approve of (Guan Eng‘s) effort. This was the kind of things (crossing over) they were shouting (in protest against) when we were in power,” said Keng Yaik.
Incidently, it was reported in the New Straits Times yesterday that Karpal had voiced disapproval of Guan Eng for offering the posts to Lee and that the move was “just not sound”.

tunku : kah choon has decided to join guan eng the day he resigned as gerakan deputy secretary general and other posts.he knew that gerakan will not gain power in penang for a very long time to come and the best way is to join dap.
if he really sincere, kah choon should have consulted his party before accepting guan eng's offer. anyway its good like what keng yaik said “ The sooner you can see the (real) face the better. No principles. No spirit of struggle and wants to take the easy way out,”.next general election we may see kah choon as dap's candidate.

I am not surprise that Kah Chon on anyone else leaving Gerakan for DAP. As far as the Chinese is concerned, Gerakan is not seen as a party that would help to protect the right of the Chinese: they are just toeing to the whim and fancy of UMNO, mengikut perantah.

I would not label Kak Chon as opportunistic, insincere or non loyal. Why stick to a party that go against your principle

A person holding so many important position previously and P.S. in Health Ministry, he must exposed to many circumstances. As a lawyer he could be outstanding politician. KY had gloomed him? i guess he could hardly survive under TK kingdom. It is only know to him and the key people.
From another angle. Does it really important? In the rough world and regional economic forthcoming crisis, whoever took up the post is not an easy task. A man with such guts, and hidden potential would dare to accept this position could have love his community in Penang, he could have confident. Gerakan and BN should feel proud that the had sent in a Graduate of Gerakan . If the economic in Penang can be sustained, people livelihood is maintained. Afterall the voters decision in 4th years could not be the main factors. there are 99 % others to tunein. Instead of wasting time angry, punishment, Govt should be tactical, creative and seriously work towards defining forth coming hardship already felt by wide spread price rise and unemployment, find QUICK defensive solutions. THe danger is every ministers and leaders reacting to every change that opposition annouces, without tactical plan, voters just watching and clap hands.
The world is changing fast, likewise, voters are well informed, observed and smarter. They are looking for leaders, politician whom can create wealth, maintain their comfort life, and keep the country CLEAN, Beautiful, Safe and healthy.
What can BN and current govt give us instead of figthing each other, openly...do it close door.
KY should feel proud that he should tell DAP, KC is spying for him..instead of showing his fatherly comment..He should tell the world..I am proud of him.

Before 2004, Gerakan was not that bad. Barely was there any event that tested the party's ability to uphold the voice of the Chinese, or the face of the Chinese.

It was only after 2004, events like the keris issue surfaced, which had insulted the Chinese, making them like a second class citizen.

If Kah Chon was not loyal, he would have jump ship before election. However, he had remained with Gerakan despite that both Gerakan and MCA has clearly lost support from the Chinese. The gigantic support for DAP was clear to every Gerakan/MCA members, even KTK, long before the election.

One would wonder why MCA, Gerakan and DAP had met following one of the infamous event. You have to remember that the Chinese are very strong in supporting each other; they are very loyal to their race, no matter how different their political agenda is. And they are general smart enough to execute things quietly.

In addition, if it's not for Kah Chon 's loyalty, he would have jump ship before the election. Any Tom, Dick and Harry could see the sea of change in the Chinese support. Instead, he stayed on for the sake of the party's "perpaduan".

The best medicine for Gerakan now is to rebuild themselves: new leaders, revamped agenda, revamped policy, revamp management ...I dont't think Kah Chon could do it by staying in Gerakan. He would be cut off. Leaving Gerakan would provide a strong jolt to trigger change.

When Gerakan wrested control over Penang in 1969, wasn't the party an opposition and not a BN/Perikatan component? So when Gerakan joined the ruling coalition, it was just a marriage of convenience for both, I suppose. Now that DAP has captured Penang, I don't discount the possibility of more Gerakan members/leaders crossing over to DAP.
