M'sian Ports Among Top 20 In The World

KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 (Bernama) -- Port Klang and the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor have been on the list of the top 20 ports of the world for the last four years, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said tonight.
He said the ports handled 337 million tonnes of cargo last year, up by 7.6 per cent from the 313 million tonnes in 2005.
"It is hoped that we can maintain the trend until Malaysian ports achieve world-class status," he said at a dinner for the media organised by the ministry here.
Chan also said that it was an achievement that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) had overcome its financial difficulties and was strengthening its financial position.
He said local airlines and the country's airports handled 43.7 million passengers last year, an increase of five per cent from the previous year.
The cargo they handled was 1.56 million tonnes, an increase of 5.2 per cent compared to that in 2005, he added.
Chan said the ministry had issued six low-cost airline licences, including the latest for Firefly which operates out of Penang.
About 500 members of the media attended the dinner.

tunku : i have to congratulate our ports management for the terrific work they have done so far in managing the ports.i really want to see our port to be rank the best in asia in the near future.if our port are of world class with cheaper cost, we will get more business than our neighbour.
