Ensure no group hijacks Umno's role

KUALA LUMPUR: Taking the cue from Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's presidential address, most of the 15 debators at the Umno general assembly here over the last two days want the party to ensure that the Malay political base remains strong.
The message sent by the delagates who had debated on the motion of thanks for the presidential address was clear - they wanted Umno to continue to play its role as the defender of Malay rights.
They wanted Umno to make clear its stand on the issue, so that it would not be hijacked by any other group.
Several spoke about the need to make it clear that the Umno general assembly was the biggest platform to address any issues affecting the Malays.
A delegate from Negri Sembilan, Datuk Jalaluddin Alias, said Friday: "This is an assembly of the Malays to discuss Malay issues. What's wrong with me talking to my wife about household affairs?"
"Please do not question our rights. We never questioned others' rights," he said.
A delegate from Puteri Umno, Fahariyah Mohd Nordin, also touched on the issue, saying she was sad that many youths did not understand the Federal Constitution and the significance of the special rights accorded the Malays.
"Many say the rights have nothing to do with them. The young don't seem to see that it is this particular aspect of the Constitution that gave the country political stability since our independence," she said.
Fahariyah also called on the Government to make Malaysian history lessons a compulsory subject so that all shoolchilren would pay heed to local history as they would need to pass in their examinations.
Najib, in his policy speech on Thursday, stressed that the provisions on Malay rights under the Federal Constituion were there to stay.
He said any discussion on the matter would only be academic, as amending the Constitution on this particular issue was next to impossible.

tunku : actually no one is hijacking Umno's role.it is just that certain leaders in Umno forcing them to do so. Umno must not forget it roles, DEMI AGAMA, BANGSA DAN NEGARA. if it champions all that, the whole nation will be protected.every citizen will be protected.leaders like nazri aziz, kj and few others should be shown the exit door. they are the one who create tense in Umno. Umno will be better off without these stooges.anyway,i was pleased and enlightened with Najib's speech yesterday.LOUD AND CLEAR.Hidup Melayu,Hidup Umno,Hidup Malaysia.

I do not understand. No one is officially reported to have asked for the removal of the Articles in the Constitution realted to the Special Position of the Malays. So why this sudden reference to this at such a high level and in such threatening terms.

Yes, some quarters have raised this suject in the context of selective application so that those who need it are attended to first instead of all being given a diluted special treatment.

When I was in Form Six and later in University Malaya in 1964, I had many Malay friends who made it on their own all way to the top. Frankly, this is not a racial thing. If you go to many Third World countries you will find that the elite have monopolised all the special positions for their children and many of them behave very badly at home in public and overseas. And in many of these countries the word 'Thank You' has been replaced with the word 'More'because of the ever shrinking economic pie.

Human nature is such that we only appreciate thing that we have to work for. The silver spoon in the mouth may sometime cause blood poisoning when mixed with certain chemicals found in the food we eat today.

I hope that level heads will prevail and that the Special Position of the Malays enshrined in our Constitution will be used effectivly by the powers that may be to uplift the the have-nots not just out of poverty but to levels where they will be able to afford all the luxuries that the so-called elite in this country enjoy. And I may add here to pay the 6% tax that is soon to be imposed on our Astro bill. In effect that will reduce the Gini between the rich and the poor.At the moment the annual income of some people in this country is just slightly less than what some of us up there spend even before we wake up for the day.

Malaysia as a nation is blessed by nature. We have not seen the level of natural clamity affecting many Third World countries. So let us not create man made ones and bring on untold suffering upon ourselves.

what role? No one is UMNO today know what their roles are. If Umno leaders who are also ministers know their roles, namewee will not be pissing on Negaraku, racial hatret and what not aginst THE MALAY and Islam. No Chinese leaders will dare to question on the rights of the Malays and Bumiputras. Instead, we have ppl in BN doing that asking for the 30% Bumi economic quota to be reviewed. They should call for all the other races to help the Malays achieve that quota if they are sincere and accept the Malay rights as enshrined in the Constitutions. No, they did not! Why, becos, they don't give a damn about the Constitutions. It was good for Najib to said about the matter BUT what can Najib do if/when some non Malay leaders continue to harp on the matter. So, to me, Umno leaders don't know their roles - Demi Bangsa, Agama dan negara is only a Slogan among Umno leaders... Hidup Perkasa. Hidup Melayu. Hidup Raja2 Melayu dan kembalikan nama Tanah Melayu untuk semenanjung ni cepat.

Oh yeah, so what do you term the demand to remove the 30% bumi discounts, the abolishment of the NEP, the incessant howling for merictocracy and 'malaysian malaysia' governance??

In effect, all these demands are challenging the article 153 of the constitution.
