Parents, schools, must educate children on the danger of driving without a licence

JOHOR BARU: Parents and school administrators must work with relevant enforcement agencies like the police and Road Transport Department to prevent teenagers from driving or riding without a licence.
"More campaigns must be organised, especially in schools, to educate the young on proper and safe driving, including obtaining a licence," Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said.
He said parents who let their children drive without a licence, out of "love", were only endangering their children's lives as well as the lives of others.
Suret added that the high number of road fatalities involving teens and youths driving cars and riding motorcycles without a driving licence was alarming.
He said of the 6,500 fatal accident cases in 2008 involving those aged between 15 and 25, some 1,200 were driving cars or riding motorcycles without a licence.
"This represents 41% of the total fatal accidents involving the particular age group for that year.
"Such a trend is worrying as they are driving without proper training and safety precautions," he told newsmen after launching the Buckle-Up operation here Sunday.
On another matter, Suret said only 20% of Malaysians were complying with wearing the rear seatbelt, since the regulation was implemented in January last year.
"This is not good enough, we hope to achieve a 50% target usage by the year's end.
"We will not hesitate to impose a maximum fine of RM300 for even students who are not wearing the rear seatbelts," he said.

tunku: i am sure everyone knows that driving without licence is against the law and dangerous.there's no such thing as parents who let their children drive without a licence because out of "love". my parents love me too but never allowed me to drive without licence and i will make sure that i will do the same to my children.don't blame the authority when you are the one who's going against the law. the parents should make sure their vehicles are under their full supervision and at night when going to sleep keep it in their room.

May I add, please get the driving licenses the legal way, many just pay the driving schools to obtain them. These kind of 'drivers' are just as bad.

Dont blame the kids. Parents should be the ones that need to be educated. Parents should be made responsible if the kids are caught. Where I stay, there is a police housing complex and the children are riding motorcycles all over without helmets. I doubt some of them have license.
