Abdullah's Wedding Anniversary Congratulations Surprises Dr M & Wife

LANGKAWI, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi caused Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to break into a broad smile of surprise at the opening dinner of the Langkawi International Dialogue 2007 when he congratulated his predecessor and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali on their wedding anniversary Sunday.
Making the surprise announcement at the opening ceremony at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre here, Abdullah wished both of them well and a long life.
Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah, who celebrate their 51st wedding anniversary, were pleasantly surprised and they smiled.
They were seated near the main table.
Some 500 guests including 10 heads of state or government, mostly from African countries, immediately gave them a huge round of applause.
The couple were married on Aug 5, 1956.
Later, when asked to respond to the Prime Minister's good wishes, Dr Mahathir said he was grateful.
"Terima kasih lah, saya tak sangka dia tahu. (I didn't know he knew about it it all)," he said, then laughed.
Did he have any plans to celebrate? "I have no plans, but I am very glad."
In paying tribute to the couple, Abdullah said Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah had contributed not only to the nation, but also to the LID community.
