PUTRAJAYA: A second economic stimulus package is in the offing which would look into extending some form of assistance to companies and retrenched workers, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the Finance Ministry was currently gathering views and input from various parties on what could be included in the second package to cover areas which were not part of the first one.
“This includes how do we deal with companies that might be on the verge of retrenching their workers. We want to look at the assistance that we can give to them (companies and workers).
“This is not a form of bail-out of companies but more of the Government looking at various angles on how we can help parties affected by the global economic slowdown,” said najib, also the Finance Minister.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Najib however declined to spell out details as “a lot of things are still being looked into.”
He also declined to reveal how much the second economic stimulus package would be worth and its launch date, saying the details would be revealed later.
“We are waiting for the right time to launch the second package. We want to ensure the focus of the second package is different from the first,” he said.
tunku : this is a good move from the government. we hope that the government will come out with some method where companies with local workers given some tax relief.we can see lots of cases where these companies are retrenching the local workers and keeping the foreign workers.government should make a law that any company which wanted to retrench its workers must retrench it's foreign workers first.the locals will be the last to be retrenched. government should also set a fund for the retrench workers to upgrade their skills.all parties should join hands and help each other to cope with this situation,we can't rely 100% on the government only.
