Decision on teaching maths and science in English in six months

JOHOR BARU: The Education Ministry expects to reach a decision on the usage of the Teaching of Mathematics and Science in English (better known by its Malay acronym PPSMI) within six months.
Deputy Minister Dr Puad Zarkashi said that a decision should be made to ensure that the students did not end up in a lose-lose situation, where they failed to master English and Mathematics and Science.
“Any decision that will be made will take into account the ministry’s readiness in manpower and teaching methods.
“We will also consider the opinions of every parties especially scholars before making any decision,” he told pressmen after launching the state-level Teacher’s Day celebration here Saturday.
Dr Puad said that a decision on the matter should be made to prevent certain parties from politicising it such as organising illegal rallies or demonstrations.
“One of the areas that will be looked into is increasing the number of qualified English teachers.
“Most English teachers are located in the cities while schools in rural areas lacked such manpower,” he said adding that, a comprehensive review would be made before any decision.
Dr Puad said another matter being considered was whether teaching both subjects in English would enable the students to master the language.

tunku : puad zarkashi is known as anti PPSMI, what to expect then from the ministry.it is given to someone who is already opposing to it.instead of moving forward we will be moving backward. till today parents are not consulted when they are the one that the ministry should engage with.manpower is not an excuse as the ministry should be able to provide that.

As a parent these are the reasons of opposing the policy of teaching mathematic and science in english:
1. Should create/add independent subject for english.
2. Should not teach english at the cost of mathematic or science subject.
3. By having science in english for sure bahasa malaysia language in science would be less developed with the new term and terminology.
4. Malay student should learn mathematic and science in their own mother tongue language to overcome the core understanding of the subject head on.
5. Our own diplomat learning various languages of the world by learning the language head on not via mathematic or science.
6. Teach english in school so that our children could use the language to speak and communicate. The rest would progress on this solid language foundation.
7. Whether we agreed or otherwise by having science and mathematic in english our children would struggle to understand english, mathematic and science at the same time.
8. UNESCO recommended early stage of education the children should learn science and mathematic in their own language.
9. It is about time for our politician to stop experimenting their policy on our children.
10. Give our children oppurtunity to learn mathematic or science head on with the subject.

Tunku,

I had serious discussions with my husband twice about this.He stll believes that Dr Mahathir was wrong in implementing this PPSMI in 2003.

His arguments are :-

If there is a lack of maths and science books available in Bahasa, why not the Education Ministry engage more translators to translate them.

If we are short of experienced translators, why not invest in
training fresh graduates or those who had just lost their jobs(with a bit of technical background)to help solve this problem.
Or we can always train maths and science teachers/lecturers to be part-time translators(to minimise resources)and give them additional allowances for their efforts.

Also, currently teachers/lecturers who are teaching Maths and Sciences be given hardship allowance or a higher salary scale so as to encourage them to teach in these two subjects.

If there are new research work and findings done in English or other foreign languages, with our trained translators they could always do the job.

Why not make Institiut Terjemahan Negara more proaktif?

One very important point, my husband said, lets have both subjects be taught in Bahasa in all schools irrespective of Chinese,Tamils and Kebangsaan. Then we are talking fairness here.If the nasionalist Malays really want to bring our Bahasa to greater heights.

Tunku,

Actually, Im all for PPSMI.But after two serious discussions with him,he made me think twice.

To add further to his argument,
the crux of the problem is with schools in the rural areas where majority of students are Malays and they come from poor families.

The rural school-going children are facing difficulties to cope with PPSMI and hence we find these children are lagging behind from their counterparts in the urban areas. As their parents are mainly farmers and fishermen, they could not afford to send their children for tuition like the urban rich.
This situation also applies to the urban poor.
The children from poor families therefore depend entirely on their teachers who on their own free will, conduct extra classes after school hours. But how many teachers who are selfless and dedicated?

Before PPSMI, they do not face such problems. In fact my son added,(he is the product before PPSMI)students do not find any problem learning Maths and Science in Bahasa in schools. Those who later entered Universities even scored their Calculus paper though their English-speaking is nothing to be proud of. Therefore he added, why the need to mend something which is not broken?(By the way he is now a Mathematical and Sciences graduate from UIA).

So here I have a living proof under my nose and Im not aware of it.

If PPSMI wins, then the Ministry got to monitor closely on the implementation especially schools in rural areas and outskirts.

If,however, teaching Maths and Science is to be revert to Bahasa, then I agree with my husband that all schools to follow and teach in Bahasa.

We have to start somewhere in order to give our Bahasa a boost. Slowly but surely our Bahasa will be a language others will look up to.
Our leaders should have the strength and political will to see to this.

My husband posted this question to me;
If the Malays do not fight for their own language and give it the status where it's due who else would?
One should be proud of one's own language because a race without a language is as good as dead.

Truly, Bahasa itu Jiwa Bangsa.

sujini,

bahasa itu jiwa bangsa tetapi sekiranya bangsa itu lemah tiada siapa yang mahu belajar bahasa bangsa itu.

yes, the ministry by all means should provide each school in this country all the necessary tools/gadget/manpower for this PPSMI thing.

i went to a remote village in pahang and some of the orang asli children can speak english(broken).i ask them how they learn english, it was the ppsmi which made them learn english.
anyway, ppsmi is not totally about english, its about acquiring knowledge/technology FAST.

I rest my case. Anyway Thank You Tunku for indulging me in this discussion.
I suppose let our visionary leaders think this out. They are so called leaders because the people have voted them to be where they are now. They have to decide without fear or favour. As leaders their thoughts and visions should be one level higher than us. Or else they dont deserve to be called Yang Berhormat or Yang Amat Berhormat.

Thank you.

Salam
