ALOR SETAR, May 6 (Bernama) -- Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak has supported a call for PAS to be led by ulama and urged members to retain party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang unopposed.
Azizan, who is Kedah PAS commissioner, said the two top posts in the party should be filled by ulama.
"Let me remind the professionals in the party, do not belittle the ulama," he told reporters after witnessing new State Secretary Datuk Wira Rasli Basir receiving an appointment letter at Istana Anak Bukit here, Wednesday.
The Sultan of Kedah Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah presented the letter to Rasli, 56, who replaced Datuk Wira Syed Unan Mashri Syed Abdullah.
"I would prefer the party to honour the tradition by supporting ulama to lead the party although this is not enshrined in the party's constitution.
"During PAS' formative years, the ulama had been instrumental in its growth while the professionals were few and far between. They were merely passengers. Is it right now for ulama to be dismissed?
"I had not seen any weaknesses of the part of the president. If the president is weak, then I will support a move to remove him. So why should we replace him?," asked Azizan.
On whether he would contest in party elections next month, Azizan said he would wait until he knew the post he was nominated for before making his decision.
tunku : only few of pas top leaders wants ulama to helm pas but the rest wants the pro anwar(secular/erdogan) to take over the leadership.anwar has manage to get his people penetrates pas leadership and these people now trying to topple the ulamas in pas and seize the party.that is why we are seeing today pas is acting like a puppet in pakatan.they have no say.anything anwar says becomes their rule.i believe many of pas members realize this scenario in pas but choose to ignore it.if they continue to do this, one day pas will no longer exist.they might merge with pkr.

Dear Tunku
What's happening in Perak today is real horrifying. A very bad precedence for the country. I fear the worst for BN and UMNO. What's happening? Are we that bad a nation that we forget what democracy and the constitution are all about? Power is sometimes dangerous. What's your opinion about the whole episode, Tunku?
